Chapter 7 - Blackthorne FallsBlackthorne Manor was burning when they returned.

Not the entire house.

The west wing.

Flames climbed from two upstairs windows while smoke rolled above the roof.

Elena screamed Lily’s name before the car stopped.

Adrian grabbed her arm.

“You run in blind, you die.”

“She’s inside!”

“I know.”

Thomas had lost enough blood to require hospitalization, but he refused to leave.

“I started this.”

Adrian looked at his wounded brother.

“You can barely stand.”

“Then point me toward something I can shoot sitting down.”

Despite everything, Adrian almost smiled.

Almost.

They divided into three teams.

Marco took six men through the service entrance.

Victor, released under guard because he knew Vale’s tactics better than anyone, took the eastern tunnel.

Adrian and Elena entered through the front.

Thomas remained in an armored SUV coordinating cameras.

The grand foyer from Lily’s drawing was filled with smoke.

The chandelier still burned above the marble floor.

Adrian remembered the first moment Lily had told him her mother was missing.

Three days.

It felt like another lifetime.

Gunfire erupted in the west corridor.

Adrian pulled Elena behind a pillar.

“You stay behind me.”

“Stop telling me to stay anywhere.”

“Elena—”

“My daughter is here because everybody around her decided what was best for her mother.”

She looked him directly in the eyes.

“I’m done waiting in rooms.”

Adrian handed her a compact pistol.

“Have you used one?”

“My father taught me.”

That surprised him.

“Your father?”

“Texas.”

She checked the magazine with practiced hands.

“Don’t make assumptions because I clean your house.”

For perhaps the first time in two days, Adrian genuinely smiled.

They moved.

Two of Vale’s men emerged near the library.

Adrian disarmed one.

Elena fired into the floor beside the other.

He dropped his weapon immediately.

“You missed,” Adrian said.

“No.”

She kept moving.

They reached the nursery.

Empty.

The hidden hatch remained open.

They descended.

In the tunnel, emergency lights glowed.

Vale had activated systems Adrian never knew existed.

At the steel archive door, Richard Vale stood waiting.

Lily was beside him.

Alive.

Unhurt.

Terrified.

Sofia stood behind him.

Her hands were tied.

Adrian stopped.

Vale smiled.

“You found the coins.”

“Send Lily over.”

“Open the door.”

“Child first.”

“You’ve already used that negotiation.”

“And it remains the only one.”

Vale raised his weapon toward Sofia instead.

“Perhaps you care less about this one.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Adrian’s face showed nothing.

Vale laughed.

“Ah. She broke your heart.”

“She broke my trust.”

“Same thing for men like you.”

Elena called softly, “Lily.”

The little girl looked toward her mother.

“Mommy.”

“Baby, look at me.”

Lily did.

“You’re okay.”

Vale said, “Enough.”

He pushed Lily toward a guard.

Adrian placed the four coins into their slots.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Click.

The biometric panel lit green.

A hidden needle extended.

BLOOD VERIFICATION.

Thomas’s voice came through Adrian’s earpiece from the SUV.

“Dad always was dramatic.”

Adrian pressed his thumb.

A drop of blood touched the sensor.

DOMINIC MORETTI LINEAGE CONFIRMED.

The steel door opened.

Cold air escaped.

Lights activated one row at a time.

The archive was enormous.

Shelves of documents.

Hard drives.

Video tapes.

Photographs.

Ledgers.

Evidence collected across thirty years.

Enough secrets to destroy judges, senators, police commanders, corporations, criminal families.

Vale’s face transformed.

Reverence.

Greed.

Vindication.

“Dominic kept everything.”

Adrian understood instantly why his father built it.

Not merely blackmail.

Protection.

Mutually assured destruction.

Nobody attacked the Morettis because Dominic possessed everyone’s secrets.

Vale moved toward the room.

Adrian blocked him.

“Lily.”

Vale sighed.

Then nodded.

His guard released her.

Lily ran.

Elena fell to her knees and caught her.

Both cried.

Adrian watched until Elena carried Lily behind the steel doorway.

Only then did he step aside.

Vale entered the archive.

“You spent fifteen years chasing this room,” Adrian said.

“Longer.”

“For what?”

“To correct history.”

Vale ran one hand across the shelves.

“Your father stole everything from me.”

“According to you.”

“He framed me.”

Sofia spoke from behind him.

“No.”

Vale turned.

She looked terrified but determined.

“He didn’t.”

“Be quiet.”

“I found the original accounts.”

Vale’s face tightened.

Sofia continued.

“You stole the forty million.”

“Stop.”

“You moved it through Marseille and blamed Dominic.”

Vale struck her.

Adrian moved instantly, but Vale raised the gun.

“Another step.”

Adrian stopped.

Sofia wiped blood from her lip.

“My whole life you told me Dominic destroyed us.”

Vale’s voice became dangerous.

“He did.”

“No. You destroyed everyone because you couldn’t admit you lost.”

Vale fired.

Sofia fell.

Adrian attacked.

He struck Vale’s wrist.

The weapon discharged into the ceiling.

Vale’s guards entered.

Then Victor appeared behind them.

Gunfire erupted.

Elena covered Lily inside the archive.

Adrian and Vale crashed against shelves.

Despite his age, Vale fought with surprising strength.

The silver cane concealed a blade.

He slashed Adrian’s arm.

Adrian drove him into the wall.

Vale laughed.

“Just like Dominic.”

“I’m nothing like him.”

“You’re exactly like him.”

Vale swung.

Adrian caught his wrist.

“You choose power over love.”

Another struggle.

“You choose secrets over peace.”

Adrian knocked the blade away.

“You’ll spend your life defending a name that poisons everyone who carries it.”

That stopped Adrian for half a second.

Enough for Vale to pull a second pistol.

A gunshot sounded.

Vale staggered.

He looked down.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Victor stood twenty feet away holding a smoking weapon.

“You should have killed me with Claire,” Victor said.

Vale fired back.

Victor fell.

Adrian tackled Vale.

The pistol skidded away.

Marco and his men flooded the tunnel.

Within seconds, Vale’s guards surrendered.

Adrian pinned Vale against the floor.

Vale smiled through blood.

“Kill me.”

Adrian’s hands tightened.

Vale wanted it.

A final Moretti execution.

Proof Adrian had inherited Dominic’s darkness.

Adrian looked toward Lily.

The child was watching him.

He released Vale.

“No.”

Vale laughed.

“Weak.”

Adrian stood.

“No.”

He looked at the archive.

“I’m ending something.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Vale’s smile vanished.

“You called police?”

“Not local police.”

Federal agents entered the mansion minutes later.

Adrian had contacted them before the alliance meeting, using the threat of financial investigation as more than a bluff.

He had offered evidence of interstate money laundering, conspiracy, kidnapping, and homicide.

In return, he demanded protection for Elena and Lily.

Vale stared at him as agents handcuffed him.

“You’ll destroy yourself too.”

Adrian looked into the archive.

“I know.”

Because the records did not only contain evidence against enemies.

They contained Moretti crimes.

His father’s.

Thomas’s.

Victor’s.

Maybe Adrian’s own.

He intended to surrender all of it.

The empire Vale wanted was about to cease existing.

Medics treated Sofia.

The bullet had struck her side.

Serious.

Not fatal.

Victor had been hit in the abdomen.

He survived surgery.

Thomas was arrested at the hospital before dawn for financial crimes and conspiracy related to Elena’s imprisonment.

Adrian didn’t interfere.

His brother had chosen.

So had Victor.

So had Sofia.

And so had Adrian.

At sunrise, he stood outside Blackthorne while firefighters extinguished the last flames.

Elena came beside him holding Lily.

“What happens now?”

Adrian looked at the mansion.

“I lose almost everything.”

“Are you afraid?”

“Yes.”

Lily reached for his hand.

Adrian looked down.

She smiled faintly.

The most powerful people he knew had deserted him.

The smallest person in the house hadn’t.

He took her hand.

Then federal agents approached Adrian.

“Mr. Moretti.”

Elena stiffened.

The lead agent held out his identification.

“We need you downtown.”

Adrian nodded.

Lily grabbed his fingers tighter.

“Are they taking you away?”

“For a while.”

“You’re coming back?”

Adrian looked at Elena.

He would not make another promise he couldn’t guarantee.

“I’m going to do everything I can.”

Lily thought about that.

Then removed the pink ribbon from her hair.

She tied it clumsily around Adrian’s wrist.

“So you remember.”

Adrian swallowed.

“Remember what?”

“Where home is.”

May you like

He looked at Blackthorne Manor.

For the first time, he knew she wasn’t talking about the house.
