Chapter 5 - The Truth Victor BuriedThe gunshot came from the balcony.

Not aimed at Adrian.

At Richard Vale.

The bullet shattered the crystal glass in Vale’s hand.

Chaos erupted.

Men overturned chairs.

Serrano’s guards drew weapons.

Vale disappeared behind the stage curtain as a second shot struck the table.

Adrian dropped behind a column.

Thomas shouted Sofia’s name.

She was already running.

Then the theater lights died.

Marco had arrived.

Exactly as planned.

But the sniper had not been part of Adrian’s plan.

Emergency lights flashed red.

Adrian moved through the shadows, ignoring men shouting behind him.

He saw Sofia slip through a backstage door.

He followed.

“Sofia!”

She turned.

For an instant, her face showed pure fear.

Not fear of Adrian.

Fear for him.

“Don’t follow me!”

“Who fired?”

“I don’t know.”

“Vale?”

“No!”

“Thomas?”

“Adrian, please.”

She ran into the alley.

A black sedan accelerated toward her.

Adrian grabbed Sofia and pulled her behind a dumpster as bullets tore through brick.

The car disappeared.

Sofia stared at him.

“You saved me.”

“Habit.”

Marco arrived seconds later.

Adrian pointed at Sofia.

“Take her.”

She didn’t resist.

By midnight, Adrian had regained control of Blackthorne Manor.

Thomas had disappeared during the theater attack.

Richard Vale had also escaped.

Two alliance members were wounded.

Nobody knew the sniper’s identity.

Sofia sat in the library beneath guard.

Victor was brought downstairs.

Adrian placed him opposite her.

Neither spoke.

That silence told him enough.

“You know each other better than I thought.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Victor looked at Adrian.

“What happened?”

“Vale says you poisoned my father.”

Victor’s face went gray.

“No.”

“Then tell me everything.”

Victor looked toward Sofia.

“She already knows.”

Adrian turned.

Sofia whispered, “Not everything.”

The story began twenty years earlier.

Victor Hale had not originally worked for Dominic Moretti.

He had worked for Richard Vale.

A driver.

Then security.

Then problem solver.

When Vale and Dominic’s partnership collapsed, Victor switched sides.

Dominic believed Victor had become disillusioned with Vale.

The truth was uglier.

Victor had been planted.

For almost ten years, he sent Vale information.

Business decisions.

Security schedules.

Negotiations.

Then Victor fell in love with Adrian’s mother’s younger sister, Claire.

They married secretly.

Dominic discovered the relationship but surprisingly approved.

Victor stopped spying for Vale.

He tried to leave that life behind.

Vale did not allow people to leave.

“So he threatened Claire?” Adrian asked.

Victor shook his head.

“He killed her.”

The room went silent.

Adrian remembered Claire’s accident.

A highway collision.

Victor had been destroyed by grief.

“It wasn’t an accident?”

“No.”

Victor’s voice cracked for the first time.

“Vale sent me photographs afterward. He told me if I disobeyed again, Thomas was next.”

“Thomas?”

Victor looked at him.

“Claire adored your brother. She practically raised him after your mother died.”

Adrian remembered.

Thomas had been twelve.

Adrian seventeen.

Claire had lived at Blackthorne for years.

“What did Vale want?”

“Information.”

“And my father?”

“Dominic discovered I had resumed contact.”

Victor said Dominic confronted him the night before his death.

Victor confessed everything.

Dominic promised protection.

They planned to move Victor out of the country and expose Vale’s network.

But before they could act, Vale gave Victor an ultimatum.

Poison Dominic or Thomas would die.

Adrian’s expression became stone.

“And you chose.”

Victor’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

The confession sat between them.

Adrian wanted to kill him.

Every lesson Dominic taught him.

Every funeral memory.

Every quiet moment beside his father’s grave rose at once.

His hand moved toward the pistol on the table.

Elena’s voice came from the doorway.

“Adrian.”

Everyone turned.

She stood with Lily sleeping in her arms.

Adrian’s hand stopped.

Elena looked at Victor.

Then at Adrian.

“Not in front of my daughter.”

Adrian stared at Lily’s sleeping face.

He pushed the pistol away.

“Take Victor downstairs.”

Victor stood.

Before leaving, he said, “I deserve whatever you decide.”

Adrian answered coldly.

“That may be the first thing we agree on.”

Sofia remained.

Adrian dismissed everyone except Elena, who placed Lily on a couch in the adjoining room.

Then he faced the woman he had intended to marry.

“Your turn.”

Sofia looked down at her hands.

“Vale is my father.”

Adrian said nothing.

“My real father.”

Her mother had worked as a translator for Vale in France.

Sofia was born from an affair.

Vale ignored her until she was nineteen.

Then he paid for school.

Introduced her to powerful people.

Created the career that eventually placed her near Adrian.

“So meeting me wasn’t an accident.”

“No.”

“Was any of it?”

Sofia looked up.

“Yes.”

“What?”

“Loving you.”

Adrian laughed once.

“You expect that to help?”

“No.”

Tears appeared.

“I expect it to make everything worse.”

Vale had ordered Sofia to gain Adrian’s trust.

At first, she treated it as an assignment.

Then months became years.

Adrian proposed privately.

She accepted.

For the first time, she considered betraying her father.

Vale discovered her hesitation.

He threatened to expose Thomas’s theft, destroy Adrian’s businesses, and kill Sofia’s mother.

“So you helped him.”

“I tried to control the damage.”

“That phrase seems popular among people who betray me.”

She winced.

Adrian continued.

“You attended meetings with Thomas.”

“Yes.”

“You helped stage your kidnapping.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Elena was imprisoned?”

Sofia’s face changed.

“No.”

Elena studied her.

“I believe her.”

Adrian looked at Elena.

“Why?”

“Because when Thomas mentioned me at that meeting, Sofia asked, ‘Who’s Elena?’”

Sofia turned toward her.

“You heard that?”

“Yes.”

For the first time, Sofia looked ashamed rather than frightened.

“I’m sorry.”

Elena’s expression remained cool.

“Save it for when my daughter stops checking every locked door.”

Sofia nodded.

Adrian asked about the vote.

Vale’s goal had never been to make Thomas leader permanently.

Thomas was disposable.

Once Adrian was removed, Vale intended to expose Thomas’s debt and install Serrano as head of the alliance.

“Why Serrano?”

“Because Vale owns him.”

That revelation changed the board.

The man Adrian assumed was his greatest rival was actually someone else’s employee.

“And tonight’s sniper?”

Sofia shook her head.

“My father wouldn’t shoot at himself.”

“Unless he wanted confusion.”

“He values his life too much.”

Elena spoke.

“Could Thomas have hired someone?”

Adrian considered it.

Thomas had disappeared.

If he realized Vale planned to discard him, he had motive.

Then Marco entered.

“We found Thomas’s car.”

“Where?”

“Near the Hudson.”

“Thomas?”

“No.”

Marco placed a phone on the table.

“We found this inside.”

A video was already open.

Adrian pressed play.

Thomas appeared on screen.

His face was bruised.

Blood ran from his nose.

He looked terrified.

“Adrian, if you see this, Vale lied to me.”

He glanced off-camera.

“They’re coming.”

Thomas spoke faster.

“He never planned to give me control. He wants Blackthorne. He wants the underground archive Dad built. That’s what all of this is about.”

Adrian frowned.

“What archive?”

Thomas continued.

“Dad kept records. Everyone. Politicians, judges, businesses, families. Vale thinks they’re under the mansion.”

A sound came from behind Thomas.

He flinched.

“Listen to me. The cellar Elena was locked in isn’t the real cellar.”

Adrian and Elena looked at each other.

Thomas leaned toward the camera.

“There’s another level.”

Footsteps approached.

Thomas whispered:

“The entrance is beneath the nursery.”

The video ended.

Elena’s face changed.

“Lily’s room.”

Adrian was already running.

They reached the upstairs nursery in seconds.

The room was empty.

The window stood open.

Curtains moved in the night wind.

On Lily’s bed lay her stuffed rabbit.

Elena screamed her daughter’s name.

Adrian checked the closet.

Bathroom.

Balcony.

Nothing.

Then he saw it.

A section of wooden floor beneath the rug had shifted.

A hidden hatch.

Open.

Elena dropped beside it.

“Lily!”

From deep below came a child’s frightened cry.

“Mommy!”

Adrian grabbed a flashlight.

He climbed down first.

Twenty feet below the nursery, a narrow tunnel stretched beneath Blackthorne Manor.

At the far end, someone was carrying Lily away.

Adrian saw a flash of her pink nightdress.

He ran.

The figure turned.

Gray hair.

Silver cane.

Richard Vale smiled from the darkness.

Then a steel gate slammed down between them.

Lily screamed.

Adrian seized the bars.

Vale lifted the child into his arms.

“Thank you for finding the entrance for me.”

Adrian’s blood froze.

Vale had never known where the archive was.

Until Thomas told him.

And Thomas had told Adrian.

Which meant Vale had deliberately allowed the video to be found.

Every step had been planned.

Vale smiled.

“Open Dominic’s archive.”

May you like

He pressed a pistol against Lily’s side.

“Or this little girl becomes the fourth person your family failed to save.”
