Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE MERCER EMPIRE COLLAPSEDCharles wanted three signatures.

Mine.

Vanessa’s.

My mother’s.

In exchange, my father walked away alive.

I had no intention of giving Charles any of them.

But he didn’t need to know that.

The FBI coordinated the response.

Charles told us to come to my grandfather’s old downtown headquarters at midnight.

No police.

No Alexander.

Naturally, both would be involved.

At eleven forty-eight, I walked into Cole Tower with Vanessa and my mother.

I wore a recording device.

Vanessa wore another.

Mom looked like she had aged ten years in a week.

The elevator rose toward the executive floor.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

I stared ahead.

“For which part?”

“All of it.”

“I can’t do this now.”

“I know.”

She swallowed.

“I spent your entire childhood trying to keep Vanessa from feeling less than you.”

“And somehow decided the solution was making me responsible for everyone?”

Her eyes filled.

“I did.”

The elevator opened.

Charles Mercer waited inside my grandfather’s old boardroom.

My father sat in a chair.

His hands were bound.

Alive.

Relief nearly knocked me over.

Charles smiled.

“Family reunion.”

I walked in.

“Let him go.”

“After signatures.”

“You first.”

He laughed.

“You always were Thomas’s granddaughter.”

“That was intended as an insult?”

Charles’s smile faded.

Documents waited on the table.

I moved closer.

“Why Daniel?”

For the microphones, I needed him talking.

“You had dozens of ways to attack the company.”

“Daniel wanted to prove himself.”

“So you sent him after me?”

“Yes.”

“Did he know from the beginning?”

“Yes.”

The answer still hurt.

“And the wedding?”

“His idea.”

“Vanessa?”

“Useful.”

Vanessa flinched.

Charles glanced at her belly.

“You were always desperate to matter.”

She went pale.

I stepped between them.

“Keep talking to me.”

Charles smiled.

“Protecting her now? After what she did?”

“She’s my sister.”

“She tried to steal your fiancé.”

“She succeeded. Turns out she did me a favor.”

Vanessa almost laughed.

Charles didn’t.

“Sign.”

I lifted the pen.

“Where’s Daniel?”

For the first time, Charles’s confidence shifted.

“He’s dead.”

“We both know that isn’t true.”

Dad looked up sharply.

Charles’s eyes narrowed.

“He called me.”

Silence.

“Interesting,” Charles said.

“So where is he?”

“I have no idea.”

I believed him.

That was more frightening.

Suddenly the office lights went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Vanessa screamed.

Something slammed into the table.

Then a gunshot exploded.

I dropped.

Alexander had made me promise that if anything happened, I would get on the floor and stay there.

For once in my life, I followed instructions.

Emergency lights flickered on.

Charles stood near the window holding a handgun.

My father’s chair lay overturned.

And another man stood in the doorway.

Daniel.

Alive.

Bloodstained.

Thin.

Holding his side.

“Drop it, Dad.”

Charles stared.

“You idiot.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“It’s over.”

“You threw away everything for her?”

Daniel glanced at me.

“No.”

Then at Vanessa.

“For myself.”

Charles raised the gun.

Daniel fired first.

The shot struck the wall.

Charles stumbled backward, startled.

That second was enough.

Federal agents stormed the room.

Maya entered with them.

Charles was tackled.

His weapon slid across the floor.

Alexander came through the doorway immediately afterward.

He saw me.

“Claire.”

“I’m okay.”

He crossed the room and pulled me upright.

Daniel sank against the wall.

Agents surrounded him.

He placed his weapon down.

“I surrender.”

I looked at him.

He looked nothing like the groom who had stood beside me days earlier.

“I didn’t kill the man at the airfield,” he said.

“Who was he?”

“One of my father’s security people. Dad arranged the body to make me disappear after I threatened to cooperate.”

Charles shouted from the floor.

“You pathetic little bastard!”

Daniel laughed weakly.

“See?”

Agents dragged Charles away.

Dad was freed.

Mom ran to him.

Vanessa stood frozen.

Daniel looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

She folded her arms over her stomach.

“You don’t get forgiveness because you finally did one decent thing.”

“I know.”

Then he looked at me.

Neither of us spoke for a long time.

Finally, Daniel said:

“I did love you.”

I believed him.

And strangely, believing him no longer mattered.

“You should tell the prosecutors everything.”

“I will.”

“Good.”

“Claire…”

I walked toward Alexander.

Daniel’s voice stopped me.

“Are you happy?”

I looked at my husband.

Alexander’s hand found mine.

“Yes.”

Daniel nodded.

“Then at least I didn’t destroy everything.”

“No,” I said.

“You only destroyed what should have ended sooner.”

The evidence gathered that night broke the case open.

Charles Mercer was charged with kidnapping, conspiracy, financial fraud, extortion, obstruction, and a collection of offenses that seemed to grow every morning.

Daniel accepted a plea agreement in exchange for full cooperation.

Lauren Mitchell was arrested in Switzerland two weeks later.

The forged records framing me were traced directly to Mercer-controlled servers.

My charges were dismissed.

Cole Meridian’s stolen money began returning through frozen accounts.

The $190 million guarantee was invalidated as fraudulently obtained.

For the first time in weeks, I thought we had survived.

Then our attorney arrived with one final discovery.

Grandpa’s trust amendment included a private letter.

Addressed to Vanessa.

My sister opened it with shaking hands.

She read silently.

Then began to cry.

“What?” I asked.

She handed me the letter.

Grandpa had not chosen Vanessa because he trusted her more.

He had chosen her because he feared she would spend her life believing she had never been chosen.

His letter ended with one sentence:

Power will not prove that you matter, Vanessa. I hope one day your sister teaches you that.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“I hated him for choosing you.”

I took her hand.

“He chose both of us.”

May you like

She cried against my shoulder.

And for the first time since we were children, neither of us was competing.
