Chapter 6 - THE DEAD MAN WHO CALLED MEDaniel Mercer was declared dead at 8:42 p.m.

At 9:17, he called me.

My phone vibrated while Alexander and I sat inside my grandfather’s study.

DANIEL MERCER.

I stared at the screen.

Alexander saw the name.

Neither of us spoke.

It rang again.

I answered.

“Hello?”

Static.

Then Daniel’s voice.

“Claire.”

My blood turned cold.

Alexander immediately signaled Maya.

“Daniel?”

“I need you to listen.”

“You’re supposed to be dead.”

“I know.”

“What the hell is happening?”

“I don’t have long.”

There was noise behind him.

An engine.

Wind.

“I didn’t kidnap Vanessa.”

My anger erupted.

“She was tied inside your warehouse!”

“My father took her.”

“You were photographed in the vehicle.”

“I was trying to get her away from him.”

“You expect me to believe you?”

“No.”

That answer silenced me.

“I expect you to hate me. You should.”

His voice broke.

“But there are things you don’t know.”

“Then tell me.”

“My father has been running this since before I met you.”

“I figured that out.”

“No. You haven’t.”

He coughed.

“I was supposed to marry you. Gain voting control. Merge the companies. Vanessa was the backup.”

“Backup?”

“If you wouldn’t marry me, he needed another Cole shareholder.”

I looked toward Vanessa.

She stood across the room.

“What about the wedding?”

“I planned it.”

At least he admitted it.

“I thought if Vanessa humiliated you publicly, you’d leave the company for a while. You always talked about wanting to travel after Grandpa died.”

“You built six years of my life around corporate theft.”

“I know.”

“Was any of it real?”

Silence.

Then:

“Yes.”

My eyes closed.

“That may be the cruelest thing you’ve ever said.”

“I fell in love with you.”

“Stop.”

“I did.”

“Then why?”

“My father owned me.”

“No. You let him own you.”

Daniel breathed heavily.

“You’re right.”

Police technicians were tracing the call.

Maya held up a finger.

Keep him talking.

“Why is everyone saying you’re dead?”

“A body was found in my car.”

“Whose?”

“I don’t know.”

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“You called me.”

“To warn you.”

“About what?”

“The loan guarantee isn’t the real problem.”

Alexander moved closer.

“What is?”

Daniel answered.

“The trust.”

I froze.

My grandfather had created a family trust controlling several major assets.

“What about it?”

“Your grandfather’s trust has a succession clause.”

“I know.”

“No, you know the version your lawyers have.”

My heart pounded.

“My father has the original.”

Alexander whispered, “Ask where.”

“Where is it?”

“Mercer Tower. Private records room. Forty-third floor.”

“What does it say?”

Daniel coughed again.

“If Cole Meridian becomes insolvent, controlling interests transfer temporarily to the creditor holding the emergency stabilization notes.”

Alexander’s eyes widened.

“Mercer holds them,” I whispered.

“Yes.”

So the $190 million loan wasn’t simply designed to bankrupt us.

Bankruptcy triggered transfer of control.

Charles Mercer could legally seize the company.

“We can stop it,” I said.

“Not if he has the original trust.”

“Why?”

“Because the copy filed with the family office is missing the amendment.”

“What amendment?”

“The successor isn’t you.”

I stopped breathing.

“Who is it?”

Daniel whispered one name.

“Vanessa.”

Everyone turned toward my sister.

She went pale.

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel continued.

“Your grandfather amended it six months before he died.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Vanessa shook her head violently.

“No.”

Daniel’s voice became urgent.

“Claire, my father needs Vanessa to sign after insolvency. That’s why he pulled her into this. That’s why he encouraged me to use her.”

Something clicked.

“He never cared whether she married you.”

“No.”

“He needed her signature.”

“Yes.”

The call crackled.

“Daniel, come in. Talk to police.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

“My father has people everywhere.”

“You don’t get to run from this.”

“I know.”

For one moment, the arrogant man from the cathedral disappeared.

I heard the Daniel I once loved.

“I’m sorry, Claire.”

I swallowed.

“So am I.”

Then a sound exploded through the phone.

Daniel gasped.

The line went dead.

“Daniel?”

Nothing.

“Daniel!”

Maya’s security team traced the call to a marina near Sausalito.

Police arrived twelve minutes later.

They found blood.

A discarded phone.

No Daniel.

Meanwhile, Alexander’s attorneys obtained an emergency order blocking the Mercer transfers.

Charles retaliated publicly.

He called me unstable.

He suggested Alexander had manipulated me into marriage to gain access to Cole assets.

Business networks devoured the story.

BILLIONAIRE WEDS JILTED BRIDE 24 HOURS AFTER ALTAR SCANDAL.

My marriage became a punchline.

The company’s lenders panicked.

By Monday morning, Cole Meridian’s board called an emergency meeting.

I walked into the conference room with Alexander.

Half the directors avoided my eyes.

Charles Mercer attended by video.

He smiled.

“Claire. Congratulations on the marriage.”

“Thank you.”

“Fast work.”

“Your son worked faster.”

His smile disappeared.

The board chair cleared his throat.

Cole Meridian faced immediate liquidity requirements.

Unless we raised $190 million within twenty-four hours, insolvency proceedings could begin.

Then Charles spoke.

“Mercer Capital is prepared to waive the default.”

Everyone stared.

“In exchange,” he continued, “for interim control under the Thomas Cole Family Trust.”

Vanessa’s face appeared on a second video screen.

She was joining remotely under protection.

Charles smiled at her.

“All we need is Ms. Cole’s signature.”

Vanessa looked at me.

For years she had wanted what I had.

My grandfather’s approval.

Power.

Recognition.

Now she could take all of it with one signature.

Charles slid the document toward the camera.

“Vanessa, this is your chance.”

My sister stared at the page.

Then she smiled.

“You’re right.”

My stomach dropped.

Charles relaxed.

Vanessa picked up a pen.

“You always told me Claire got everything.”

She placed the tip against the signature line.

“And for years, I believed you.”

“Vanessa,” I said.

She looked directly into the camera.

Then snapped the pen in half.

“But Claire is my sister.”

Charles’s face went dark.

Vanessa pushed the document away.

“And you can go to hell.”

The meeting erupted.

Alexander squeezed my hand.

For the first time in years, I was proud of my sister.

Then the conference-room doors opened.

Two federal agents walked in.

They weren’t looking at Charles.

They were looking at me.

“Claire Kane?”

“Yes?”

One agent displayed a warrant.

“You’re under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and falsification of corporate records.”

Alexander stood.

“What?”

May you like

Handcuffs closed around my wrists.

Across the screen, Charles Mercer smiled.
