Chapter 9 - The Last AccountThe anonymous note could have been a trap.

Six months earlier, Daniel might have rushed after it.

Now he did something the Whitmore family had rarely done.

He told everyone.

Michael.

Vanessa.

Eleanor.

Marcus.

Federal investigators.

“No more private investigations,” Daniel said.

Michael raised an eyebrow.

“Says the man whose first instinct is to investigate everything privately.”

“Growth.”

Vanessa smiled.

“I'm witnessing history.”

Investigators examined the paper.

No usable fingerprints.

The handwriting didn't match Dominic, Andrew or any known associate.

But the paper itself came from Whitmore Holdings stationery discontinued fifteen years earlier.

Michael stared.

“Someone from Dad's era.”

Daniel nodded.

The note was accompanied by six numbers:

11-04-91

23

17

5

Michael recognized the first sequence.

“November fourth, 1991.”

“What happened?”

“Our grandfather died.”

Daniel understood.

The original succession.

Eleanor inheriting controlling shares.

The numbers likely referenced archival documents.

They entered Whitmore's underground records facility beneath its old headquarters in Manhattan.
