Chapter 6 - The Man Who Came Back From the DeadMichael Whitmore appeared at 7:16 that evening.

Daniel was standing in the mansion study examining a map of Bridgeport Harbor when Marcus abruptly drew his weapon toward the open terrace doors.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar crossing his left temple.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

Daniel knew him immediately.

For six years, he'd imagined this moment.

In some versions, he punched Michael.

In others, he hugged him.

Sometimes he simply stared.

Reality gave him none of those.

Daniel whispered, “You son of a bitch.”

Michael almost smiled.

“Good to see you too, Danny.”

Daniel crossed the room and hit him.

Michael stumbled backward.

Marcus didn't intervene.

Daniel grabbed his brother's shirt.

“Six years.”

“I know.”

“Six years!”

“I know.”

Daniel hit him again.

Then something inside him collapsed.

He pulled Michael into his arms.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Daniel felt his brother's shoulders shake.

“I thought you were dead.”

“I know.”

“I buried you.”

“I'm sorry.”

Daniel pushed him away.

“Don't say sorry like you missed dinner.”

Michael wiped blood from his lip.

“I deserve worse.”

“Yes.”

“I'll take it later.”

Daniel remembered Vanessa.

“Sophie and Vanessa have been taken.”

Michael went pale.

“Where?”

“Bridgeport. Dominic wants the encryption key.”

Daniel opened his hand.

Michael stared at the tiny cylinder.

“You found it.”

“You hid it in the compass.”

“I knew you'd never throw it away.”

“You apparently knew many things about me while letting me believe you were dead.”

Michael looked away.

“Where's Eli?”

“Safe.”

Michael's face changed.

“Thank God.”

Daniel noticed.

Whatever else his brother had become, his love for the boy was real.

“What is on the drives?”

“Enough to destroy Dominic's network.”

“Then we hand it to the FBI.”

“It's not that simple.”

“Everybody keeps telling me that.”

“Because Dominic owns people. Judges. executives. police officers. Customs officials. Two federal investigators disappeared after getting close.”

Marcus frowned.

“You have names?”

“Some.”

“Give them to me.”

Michael opened his jacket and removed a flash drive.

“This is the secondary archive.”

Daniel nearly laughed.

“How many secret drives do you have?”

“Enough to stay alive.”

They spent ninety minutes reviewing the plan.

Daniel would arrive at Pier 19 carrying the key.

Marcus and law-enforcement tactical officers would position themselves nearby.

Michael would remain hidden unless Dominic appeared.

“No,” Michael said.

“Why?”

“Dominic wants me, not Daniel.”

“He kidnapped Vanessa and Sophie because he wants the key.”

“He wants both.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Then why?”

Michael hesitated.

“Because I'm the only witness who can directly tie him to Rebecca's death.”

Daniel's voice softened.

“You saw something.”

Michael nodded.

“The night before Rebecca died, Dominic called me. He said she had taken something that belonged to him. I told him if he came near my family, I'd kill him.”

“What happened?”

“He told me I couldn't protect everybody.”

Michael stared into the distance.

“The next afternoon, Rebecca called. She was driving Noah home from school. A black SUV was following her.”

Daniel felt sick.

“I told her to keep driving toward the police station.”

Michael's jaw tightened.

“I heard the crash happen over the phone.”

Silence.

“I got there ten minutes later. The car was down the ravine. Dominic was standing beside the road.”

“You saw him?”

“Yes.”

“What did he say?”

“He told me accidents happen to people who don't understand their place.”

Daniel could barely imagine carrying that memory for eight years.

“Why didn't you kill him?”

“I tried.”

Michael gave a humorless smile.

“Dad stopped me.”

“What?”

“Charles arrived. He convinced me to go home, said he'd handle Dominic. By morning, Dominic was supposedly dead.”

“The fake heart attack.”

Michael nodded.

“Dad showed me the death certificate. I wanted to believe it.”

“When did you learn?”

“Two years later.”

“And then your plane.”

“Exactly.”

Daniel sat.

“Why did Dad protect him?”

“Because Dominic had evidence Dad had helped launder hundreds of millions.”

“Our father traded Rebecca and Noah for his company.”

Michael didn't respond.

That was response enough.

At 11:18 p.m., Daniel left for Pier 19.

Rain fell over the harbor.

Shipping containers formed dark corridors along the waterfront.

Daniel drove alone, at least visibly.

The encryption key sat in his pocket.

A warehouse door stood open.

Inside, Vanessa was tied to a chair.

Sophie sat beside her.

Dominic Moretti stood behind them.

He looked surprisingly ordinary.

Seventy.

Silver hair.

Expensive coat.

The face of a retired banker.

Not a monster.

Daniel entered.

“Let them go.”

Dominic smiled.

“Charles's youngest.”

“You knew my father.”

“Better than either of his sons.”

“Lucky him.”

“Still arrogant.”

“You kidnapped a five-year-old.”

“I raised that child.”

“You stole her.”

“I protected her from two unstable fugitives.”

Vanessa spat at him.

Dominic struck her.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Touch her again and you won't leave here.”

Dominic laughed.

“You think because your name appears on skyscrapers you frighten me?”

“No.”

Daniel held up the key.

“This does.”

Dominic stopped smiling.

“Put it on the table.”

“Release Sophie.”

“Key first.”

“No.”

A gun appeared in Dominic's hand.

He pointed it at Vanessa.

Daniel's pulse surged.

“Fine.”

He placed the key on a metal table.

Dominic motioned to one of his men.

The man picked it up.

“Verify it.”

A laptop sat nearby.

The key was inserted.

Green light.

Dominic smiled.

“Finally.”

“Now release them.”

“Do you know what your brother never understood, Daniel?”

“I don't care.”

“Michael believed truth has power.”

Dominic walked closer.

“Truth has no power until someone powerful decides it matters.”

A voice echoed from the darkness.

“Then let's test that.”

Dominic froze.

Michael stepped from behind a shipping container.

Vanessa inhaled sharply.

“Michael.”

Dominic smiled slowly.

“There you are.”

Michael held both hands visible.

“Let them go.”

“You've been difficult to kill.”

“So I've heard.”

Dominic aimed at him.

Daniel tensed.

Michael continued.

“You wanted me. Here I am.”

Dominic's expression twisted.

“You ruined everything.”

“No. You did that yourself.”

“You stole from me.”

“You murdered my wife.”

“Rebecca chose her fate.”

Michael lunged.

The gun fired.

Vanessa screamed.

Michael hit the floor.

Daniel tackled Dominic.

Gunfire exploded outside.

Tactical officers stormed the warehouse.

Dominic's men scattered.

Daniel struck Dominic once, twice.

Marcus pulled him away.

“Daniel!”

Dominic lay bleeding but conscious.

Daniel turned.

Michael was on the floor.

Blood spread across his shirt.

“Michael!”

Daniel dropped beside him.

The bullet had entered high near the shoulder.

Michael grimaced.

“Hurts.”

“You idiot.”

“Probably.”

Vanessa shouted.

“Sophie!”

One of Dominic's men had grabbed the child during the chaos.

He ran toward the rear exit.

Daniel sprinted after them.

The man reached the pier.

A boat engine roared.

Then another figure stepped from behind a container.

Eleanor Whitmore.

She held a gun.

Everyone froze.

Dominic's man pressed a weapon against Sophie's head.

Eleanor's voice was steady.

“Put my granddaughter down.”

Daniel stared at his mother.

The gunman laughed.

“You won't shoot.”

Eleanor fired.

The bullet struck his leg.

He collapsed.

Sophie ran.

Daniel caught her and lifted her into his arms.

Behind them, sirens filled the harbor.

Dominic stared at Eleanor.

She walked toward him.

“You should have stayed dead.”

He smiled.

“So should your son.”

Eleanor raised the gun.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Mom.”

Her eyes remained on Dominic.

“Move.”

“No.”

“He murdered Noah.”

“I know.”

“He destroyed Michael.”

“I know.”

“He deserves—”

“I know.”

Daniel lowered her weapon gently.

“But this ends differently.”

Dominic laughed from the floor.

“You Whitmores never change.”

Daniel looked at him.

“Actually, that's exactly what changes tonight.”

Federal agents handcuffed Dominic Moretti at 11:58 p.m.

At midnight, for the first time in six years, both Whitmore brothers were alive, together, and no longer hiding.

But the largest secret had not yet been exposed.

Because when investigators unlocked Michael's encrypted archive, they found something none of them expected.

Dominic hadn't stolen two billion dollars.

He had stolen almost seven.

And hundreds of millions were still moving through Whitmore Holdings.

May you like

Which meant Dominic wasn't the last person involved.

Someone inside Daniel's company was still working for him.
