Chapter 2 - THE FAMILY NAMEDaniel laughed.

It was the wrong reaction.

Not a real laugh. Not even confidence.

It was the sharp, disbelieving sound of a man who had lived his entire life believing consequences happened to other people.

“You’re arresting me?”

Detective Marcus Hale remained beside the door.

“I haven't said that yet.”

Richard Mercer moved immediately.

“My attorney will be here in ten minutes.”

Marcus nodded.

“Your son is welcome to counsel.”

“You don't understand who you're dealing with.”

Marcus looked almost bored.

“People say that to police officers more often than you'd think.”

Rachel stayed beside Abigail.

She had known Marcus Hale for eighteen years.

They had met when his younger brother, an Army medic, had served under Rachel during one of her earlier commands. After Marcus’s brother was killed overseas, Rachel had personally traveled to his parents' home and stayed long after the official notification team departed.

Marcus had never forgotten.

Neither had Rachel.

But she had not called him because she wanted special treatment.

She called because she feared the opposite.

She wanted someone who could not be intimidated by the Mercer name.

Marcus walked toward Abigail.

“Mrs. Mercer, I'm Detective Hale. I want you to know something before we start. You control this conversation. If you need to stop, we stop. If you want your mother here, she stays. If you want her outside, she goes outside.”

Abigail wiped her face.

“She stays.”

Marcus pulled over a chair.

“Okay.”

Daniel moved toward the bed.

“Abby, don't do this.”

Rachel stepped between them.

Marcus turned.

“Mr. Mercer, step back.”

“She is my wife.”

“She is also an alleged assault victim.”

Richard's phone was already against his ear.

Elaine whispered something to Daniel.

Rachel could not hear the words.

But Abigail could.

She suddenly spoke.

“She told him to erase the cameras.”

Every head turned.

Elaine stopped breathing.

Marcus leaned forward.

“What cameras?”

Abigail pointed weakly toward Daniel.

“Our house has security cameras.”

Daniel stared at her.

“The system hasn't worked for months.”

“That's not true.”

“Abigail.”

“You checked it from your phone yesterday.”

His face tightened.

Marcus stood.

“Where is your house?”

Richard ended his phone call.

“You will not enter private property without a warrant.”

Marcus nodded.

“That's correct.”

Richard seemed surprised by the agreement.

Marcus continued.

“So I'll get one.”

The door opened again.

A physician entered, followed by a nurse.

“Mrs. Mercer needs rest.”

Marcus stood.

“I'll keep this brief.”

The doctor looked at Rachel.

“Colonel Gardner?”

“Yes.”

“I’m Dr. Patel. Your daughter has a fractured rib, extensive soft-tissue bruising, a concussion, and injuries around the neck consistent with compression.”

Daniel’s face drained.

Rachel heard only one phrase.

Compression around the neck.

Not an accident.

Not a fall.

Dr. Patel continued.

“We're keeping her overnight for observation.”

“Is she safe?”

“At the moment, yes.”

Abigail stared at the blanket.

Then she whispered, “There’s more.”

Rachel sat beside her.

“What?”

Abigail looked toward Daniel.

“I’m pregnant.”

No one moved.

Rachel’s hand covered her mouth.

Daniel stared at Abigail.

“You told me you weren't.”

“I found out yesterday.”

“How far?”

“Seven weeks.”

For one brief moment, Daniel looked genuinely shocked.

Then his face changed again.

Calculation replaced surprise.

“That changes things.”

Rachel slowly looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel approached the bed.

“We can fix this.”

Abigail recoiled.

Marcus stood between them.

“Back up.”

Daniel ignored him.

“Abby, we’re having a baby.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“You slammed my head into a wall.”

“That wasn't supposed to happen.”

The room became silent.

Daniel seemed to realize what he had said.

Marcus did too.

“So something was supposed to happen?”

Daniel looked at him.

“I want my lawyer.”

Marcus nodded.

“Good choice.”

Richard grabbed his son's arm.

“Not another word.”

Two uniformed officers appeared in the hallway.

Richard saw them.

His composure cracked.

“Detective, this is absurd.”

Marcus turned to the officers.

“Escort Mr. Daniel Mercer downstairs while we determine probable cause.”

Daniel pulled away.

“You can't—”

Marcus looked at him.

“You just admitted physical contact occurred during the incident. We have visible injuries, statements from the victim, and medical findings. You can walk downstairs voluntarily or you can make this considerably less dignified.”

Richard stepped closer.

“I will have your badge.”

Marcus smiled faintly.

“Get in line.”

The officers led Daniel away.

Elaine followed, furious.

Richard remained.

He looked toward Abigail with something that made Rachel's skin crawl.

Not concern.

Warning.

“You have no idea what you’re doing.”

Abigail's fingers trembled.

Rachel took her hand.

Richard continued.

“Daniel loves you.”

Abigail stared at him.

“He almost killed me.”

“He lost his temper.”

Rachel stood.

“Leave.”

Richard ignored her.

“This family gave Abigail everything.”

“She is not property.”

“She lived in a five-million-dollar house. Traveled first class. Had access to opportunities most people could never imagine.”

Abigail suddenly laughed through her tears.

It sounded broken.

“You know what he called the credit cards?”

Richard looked at her.

She answered for him.

“Leashes.”

Rachel’s chest tightened.

Abigail continued.

“If I wanted groceries, he knew. If I bought coffee, he knew. When I visited Mom, he wanted receipts for gas.”

“That's simply financial responsibility.”

“He put a tracker in my car.”

Richard did not deny it.

Rachel looked at him.

“You knew.”

Richard's silence was enough.

Abigail squeezed Rachel’s hand.

“He knows everything.”

“What do you mean?”

Her eyes moved to Richard.

“He knows about the basement.”

For the first time, Richard Mercer's face truly changed.

Marcus noticed.

“What basement?”

Abigail whispered, “At their house.”

Richard's voice turned hard.

“That's enough.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Sir, you need to leave.”

Richard pointed at Abigail.

“You are confused and medicated.”

“No.”

“You don't know what you saw.”

“I saw files.”

Rachel leaned closer.

“What files?”

Abigail swallowed.

“Women.”

Daniel's former girlfriends.

Former employees.

Photographs.

Settlement agreements.

Hospital records.

Rachel felt something dark settle in her chest.

“How many?”

“I don't know.”

“Ten?”

Abigail shook her head.

“More.”

Richard backed toward the door.

Marcus watched him carefully.

Abigail continued.

“I found them three months ago. That's why Daniel started watching me.”

Richard left without another word.

Marcus waited until his footsteps disappeared.

Then he turned to Abigail.

“Tell me everything you remember.”

She did.

For nearly an hour.

A basement office in Richard Mercer's lake house.

A locked cabinet Abigail had accidentally discovered open during a family dinner.

Folders labeled with women's names.

Cash-payment records.

Nondisclosure agreements.

Photographs of bruises.

Private investigators' reports.

And one folder that had terrified her more than the rest.

Her own name.

ABIGAIL GARDNER MERCER.

Inside were printed copies of private emails.

Photographs of Rachel entering military buildings.

Abigail’s medical records.

And a page titled:

CONTINGENCY — DIVORCE / REPUTATIONAL RISK.

Rachel felt cold.

Marcus stopped taking notes.

“You're sure?”

“Yes.”

“Did you photograph anything?”

Abigail nodded.

Daniel had caught her before she could send the pictures.

But she had hidden the phone.

“Where?”

Abigail looked at Rachel.

“In your house.”

“My house?”

“The guest bedroom.”

Rachel remembered Abigail visiting two weeks earlier.

She had seemed distracted.

“I taped it beneath the bottom drawer of the nightstand.”

Marcus rose.

“We need that device.”

Rachel reached for her keys.

“I'll go.”

“No.”

Marcus's tone stopped her.

“Why?”

“Because if Richard knows that evidence exists, he may know where you've been and where you're going.”

Rachel frowned.

“My home is secure.”

Marcus shook his head.

“You told me these people hired investigators.”

Rachel understood.

Marcus called another detective.

Then he looked at Abigail.

“Did anyone besides you know about the phone?”

“No.”

“Password?”

“Mom’s birthday.”

Rachel almost smiled despite everything.

A nurse entered to check Abigail's blood pressure.

As she worked, Abigail looked at her mother.

“Are you disappointed in me?”

Rachel stared at her.

“For what?”

“For staying.”

Rachel sat down immediately.

“No.”

“I kept thinking he'd change.”

Rachel held her daughter’s hand.

“He convinced you to hope. That's very different.”

“I should have left the first time.”

“The only thing that matters tonight is that you survived the last time.”

Abigail cried silently.

Rachel kissed her forehead.

“I’m here now.”

A knock came from the doorway.

A young detective entered.

“Detective Hale?”

Marcus turned.

“We just heard from the team headed to Colonel Gardner's house.”

Rachel stood.

“What happened?”

The detective hesitated.

“The back door was forced open.”

Rachel's pulse jumped.

“The phone?”

“They're still clearing the property.”

Marcus's expression hardened.

“When was the alarm triggered?”

“It wasn't.”

Rachel stared at him.

“My alarm was armed.”

“I know.”

The detective held up a photograph on his phone.

“The panel was professionally bypassed.”

Abigail whispered, “Oh God.”

Marcus looked at Rachel.

“Richard isn't trying to defend his son anymore.”

Rachel understood.

He was destroying evidence.

Marcus’s phone rang.

He answered.

Listened.

Then frowned.

“What?”

Rachel watched him.

Marcus slowly turned toward Abigail.

“Okay. Don't touch anything. Photograph it where it is.”

He ended the call.

“What did they find?” Rachel asked.

“The phone.”

Relief flooded Abigail’s face.

But Marcus wasn't relieved.

He stared at her.

“Someone had already found it before us.”

Abigail went pale.

“How do you know?”

“Because the phone was still under the drawer.”

May you like

Marcus paused.

“But the memory card is gone.”
