Chapter 9 - THE WEDDING THAT BECAME A TRAPThe morning of Vanessa Bellini's wedding began with a phone call from my brother.

I was sitting beside my father's hospital bed when my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
My heart stopped.
I answered immediately.
"Noah?"
"Liv?"
His voice sounded weak.
I stood.
"Are you hurt?"
"I'm okay."
"Where are you?"
A pause.
Then someone moved beside him.
A man's voice spoke.
"Tell your sister what happens if she doesn't follow instructions."
Noah's breathing quickened.
I closed my eyes.
"Victor?"
The man laughed.
"Good morning, Olivia."
I gripped the phone.
"Let my brother go."
"Such a devoted sister."
"What do you want?"
"Exactly what I've wanted from the beginning."
"Then why are you making us do all this?"
"Because men like Luca Moretti don't surrender power willingly."
I looked toward my father's sleeping figure.
He was exhausted.
Eleven years of captivity had left him malnourished and weak.
The doctors were still assessing his condition.
He'd survived unimaginable suffering.
And now Victor wanted to use him again.
"Your father is a very stubborn man," Victor continued.
My skin prickled.
"Leave him alone."
"Then bring the evidence."
"Where?"
"St. Augustine's Chapel. Four o'clock."
I glanced at the clock.
It was 9:14 in the morning.
"And Noah?"
"Your brother will be there."
"How do I know?"
"You'll see him before the ceremony."
"Then he walks away."
A low chuckle.
"You're in no position to negotiate."
I forced my voice to remain steady.
"Neither are you."
Silence.
Then:
"Careful, Olivia."
I stared through the hospital window.
Chicago stretched beneath a pale sky.
Somewhere in that enormous city, men were arranging a wedding ceremony around a kidnapped college student.
I took a breath.
"You want the originals. You want Luca's signature. You want everything transferred before the police can stop you."
Victor said nothing.
"So you need me."
"An interesting conclusion."
"Then Noah stays alive."
A pause.
"Bring the evidence. And tell Luca not to disappoint his bride."
The call ended.
I stood motionless.
Then I turned.
Luca was in the doorway.
He had heard enough.
"Victor?"
I nodded.
"Four o'clock."
He looked exhausted.
He hadn't slept.
Neither had I.
His shirt was wrinkled.
His dark hair was disheveled.
And there was a bruise near his jaw from the chaos at the mansion.
For a moment, he looked less like a powerful crime boss and more like a man carrying too many lives on his shoulders.
"We'll get Noah back," he said.
I looked at him.
"And your brother?"
His expression tightened.
"No word from Matteo."
"What about Marco?"
Luca's face hardened.
"He's gone."
My stomach twisted.
"When?"
"An hour ago. Security found evidence that he accessed our communications logs."
"So Dad was right."
"Yes."
I swallowed.
"How long has Marco been working for Victor?"
"We don't know yet. Internal records show suspicious payments to a relative, but we need more evidence."
Luca looked away.
"I trusted him with my life."
I thought about the mansion.
The engagement dinner.
Marco's urgency when he announced the security footage.
His apparent loyalty.
And the way Victor had always seemed to know our next move.
"Did Marco help Vanessa escape?"
"Possibly."
I shook my head.
"Then they know everything."
"Not everything."
Something in Luca's tone made me look up.
"What do you mean?"
He pulled out a small black phone.
"Detective Price has been coordinating with federal investigators. They've obtained emergency warrants and are preparing to secure the financial records and rescue Noah."
I stared at him.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I wanted to make sure the plan was viable before giving you hope."
I folded my arms.
"Don't do that."
He frowned.
"What?"
"Decide what I can handle."
His expression softened.
"You're right."
I stepped closer.
"I've spent eleven years believing my father was dead. I found out your fiancée attacked me because I discovered evidence of a criminal conspiracy. My brother was kidnapped. My mother has been terrified. And the man you trusted most betrayed you."
My voice trembled.
"I need to be part of the decisions affecting my family."
Luca nodded.
"You will be."
He paused.
"Even if that means you decide you want nothing to do with me when this is over."
I looked at him.
For the first time, I heard the fear beneath his words.
He was afraid I would leave.
I didn't know what to say.
Part of me wanted to.
I wanted a quiet life.
A safe apartment.
A job where nobody carried a gun.
A future where my brother worried about exams instead of kidnappers.
But another part of me had seen something beneath Luca's reputation.
A man who had spent years trying to honor the stranger who saved him.
A man capable of admitting he was wrong.
A man who had chosen to involve the police rather than settle every problem with violence.
And I didn't know what that meant for us.
Not yet.
"Luca," I whispered.
He looked at me.
"After this is over, you owe me a lot of answers."
A faint smile touched his mouth.
"I know."
"And some of them better be good."
His smile deepened.
"Fair."
Then my father spoke from the bed.
"That's my girl."
We turned.
Dad was awake, watching us.
His expression was tired but amused.
"Always knew how to keep a man honest."
I laughed through sudden tears.
"Dad."
He reached for my hand.
"Come here, pumpkin."
I sat beside him.
He looked toward Luca.
"Your father once told me the most dangerous thing a man can lose is his conscience."
Luca's expression changed.
"I remember him saying that."
Dad nodded.
"He wasn't always the man he wanted to be. But he was trying to become better."
Luca looked down.
"I know."
Dad squeezed my hand.
"Don't let my daughter become another debt you're trying to repay."
The words hung between them.
Luca met his eyes.
"I won't."
"She's not a way to make up for the past."
"I understand."
"Then protect her right to choose what kind of life she wants."
Luca nodded slowly.
"I will."
Dad studied him.
Then smiled faintly.
"Good."
For a moment, the hospital room felt almost peaceful.
Then Eleanor entered.
"We have the deposit."
My pulse quickened.
She placed a folder on the bedside table.
The sealed evidence had been recovered through a court-authorized process that morning.
Inside were original financial records, correspondence, and recordings implicating Victor, Anthony Bellini, and several associates.
Luca opened the folder.
His expression changed.
"These are enough?"
"Enough to support multiple warrants and major charges. We'll still need witnesses and forensic verification."
Dad leaned back.
"Thomas Hayes finally kept his promise," he whispered to himself.
I took his hand.
"You did, Dad."
But Eleanor wasn't finished.
"There's more."
She removed a photograph.
A man in a dark suit stood outside St. Augustine's Chapel.
He was speaking with Vanessa.
And beside him stood Matteo.
Alive.
Uninjured.
I looked at Luca.
"Your brother."
Eleanor nodded.
"We obtained the image through surveillance this morning."
Luca stared at it.
"What is he doing?"
"We believe he's trying to reach Noah."
I frowned.
"How?"
Eleanor pointed to the photograph.
"Matteo worked with Victor for years. He knows the security arrangements. He's the only person who may be able to move inside without raising suspicion."
"Has he contacted you?" Luca asked.
Eleanor hesitated.
"Indirectly. He passed information to an officer through an intermediary."
Luca looked furious.
"He could have called me."
"Victor threatened Lily. Matteo may fear any open contact will put her at risk."
I thought about the little girl.
Her pink pajamas.
Her stuffed rabbit.
The way she'd clung to Matteo and asked whether her grandfather was angry.
"She deserves better," I whispered.
Eleanor nodded.
"She does."
At three-thirty, the operation began.
I rode with Eleanor to a secure location near St. Augustine's Chapel.
Luca traveled separately with his legal counsel and police protection.
My father remained at the hospital under guard.
My mother was still in a safe location, unaware of the full details.
I hated that we had to keep the truth from her a little longer.
But Dad had promised to call as soon as Noah was safe.
At 3:46, Eleanor received a message.
She read it.
Then looked at me.
"Matteo confirms Noah is inside the chapel's basement."
My heart hammered.
"Is he okay?"
"He's conscious."
I covered my mouth.
"Thank God."
Eleanor checked her watch.
"Remember, Olivia, you don't have to enter that building."
I looked toward the chapel.
White ribbons decorated the iron fence.
A florist was unloading roses from a van.
Someone had arranged candles along the front steps.
To anyone passing by, it looked like an ordinary wealthy couple's wedding.
They would never guess that a college student was being held hostage beneath the floor.
"I know," I said.
Eleanor studied my face.
"Then why are you holding that invitation?"
I looked down.
A cream-colored card rested between my fingers.
Vanessa Bellini and Luca Moretti.
Four o'clock.
St. Augustine's Chapel.
I remembered the engagement dinner.
The humiliation.
Vanessa's cruel smile.
Her certainty that I could be silenced.
I folded the invitation.
"Because I want to see her realize she can't hurt us anymore."
Eleanor's expression softened.
"I understand. But we can do that without putting you in danger."
I looked toward the chapel.
"Then let's bring my brother out first."
At 3:58, a police officer approached.
"Detective, the team is in position."
Eleanor nodded.
"Proceed on my signal."
Inside the chapel, the organ began playing.
I heard the music faintly through the open doors.
A wedding march.
I imagined Vanessa walking down the aisle in an expensive white gown, believing she had finally won.
But things were already changing.
A few minutes later, Eleanor's radio crackled.
"Basement access secured."
I gripped the edge of the car seat.
"Status?"
A pause.
Then a man's voice:
"Hostage located."
My eyes filled.
"Is he alive?"
Eleanor leaned toward the radio.
"Confirm condition."
Static.
Then:
"Male, approximately twenty years old. Conscious. No immediate life-threatening injuries apparent."
A sob escaped me.
Noah.
My little brother.
Alive.
The officer continued.
"Preparing extraction."
Then the radio erupted in shouting.
A loud noise echoed from inside the chapel.
Someone screamed.
Eleanor's face hardened.
"Report!"
Static.
Then a strained voice.
"Suspect moving toward the front entrance! Possible weapon!"
My heart stopped.
Eleanor reached for her radio again.
"All teams, maintain positions. Protect civilians. Confirm hostage location."
Another burst of static.
Then:
"Hostage secure. Moving him out the rear."
I began crying.
But the danger wasn't over.
Because the chapel doors suddenly opened.
And Vanessa Bellini appeared.
She wore a magnificent white wedding gown with a twenty-foot train.
Diamonds glittered around her neck.
Her blonde hair was arranged beneath an elaborate veil.
But her face was twisted with rage.
Behind her stood Luca.
And several feet away, Victor Salazar held a pistol.
I watched in horror.
Victor grabbed Vanessa by the arm.
He shouted something I couldn't hear.
Then raised the weapon toward Luca.
Everything seemed to happen at once.
Police officers called for him to drop it.
Vanessa screamed.
Luca moved behind a stone pillar.
And Victor turned his head.
For one impossible second, his eyes met mine through the windshield.
He recognized me.
Then he smiled.
I felt my blood freeze.
He pointed the pistol toward the police vehicle.
Eleanor shouted for me to get down.
I ducked.
A sharp crack split the afternoon air.
Glass shattered somewhere nearby.
I screamed.
Then officers moved between the chapel and our vehicle, shielding the civilians.
I heard another shout.
"Weapon down!"
A few seconds later, someone yelled:
"Suspect in custody!"
I remained crouched until Eleanor opened my door.
"Olivia?"
I looked up.
Her face was tense.
"Are you hurt?"
I shook my head.
"Where's Noah?"
She took my hand.
"He's safe."
My chest collapsed with relief.
Then I looked toward the chapel.
Police officers were escorting Victor toward a waiting vehicle.
His wrists were handcuffed.
His expensive suit was torn.
His face had lost its smile.
Vanessa stood nearby, arguing with two officers.
Her wedding gown dragged across the wet pavement.
Her veil hung crookedly.
And standing beside the chapel doors was Luca.
He looked straight at me.
Alive.
Unhurt.
I began crying harder.
Because only then did I realize how frightened I'd been of losing him.
But before I could move, Eleanor's radio crackled again.
"Detective, we have another situation."
She stopped.
"What?"
"Matteo Moretti was injured during the basement extraction."
Luca turned at the sound of his brother's name.
The officer continued.
"He's conscious. Paramedics are with him."
I watched Luca's face change.
May you like
And for the first time, I saw the powerful mafia boss forget everything except his family.
He ran toward the ambulance.
