Chapter 7 - THE HOUSE WHERE THE ROSES DIEDBlackthorn House had stood empty for twenty-two years.

The fire had destroyed the roof, the east wing, and most of the upper floor, leaving behind a skeleton of blackened brick and twisted iron.
The land belonged to a holding company registered in Delaware.
That company belonged to Vittorio Moretti.
Luca discovered the detail while driving toward the ruins.
His father had once owned the property.
Vittorio had purchased it six months after the fire.
For almost nothing.
"Why would he keep it?" Marco asked.
Luca studied the documents on his tablet.
"Because people don't sell places that contain their secrets."
Emma sat in the back seat beside Noah.
She hadn't wanted to come.
Every mile of road toward Blackthorn brought back memories she had spent two decades trying to bury.
The smell of her mother's perfume.
Her father's booming laugh.
Noah running through the kitchen with muddy shoes.
And the night the police arrived at her aunt's house, their expressions telling her everything before they spoke.
Yet she had insisted on coming.
Luca had argued.
She had refused to back down.
Finally, he said:
"You stay behind the security team. If anything feels wrong, you leave."
Emma looked at him.
"You're used to giving orders."
"Yes."
"I'm used to surviving without permission."
For the first time in days, Luca smiled.
"Point taken."
They reached Blackthorn shortly after noon.
Rain clouds hung low over the dead trees.
A rusted iron gate stood open.
Beyond it, a cracked driveway curved toward the ruins.
Emma stepped out of the SUV.
Her chest tightened.
The house was smaller than she remembered.
Or perhaps childhood had made everything enormous.
A broken fountain sat beside the driveway.
To the left, a line of stone columns marked where her mother's rose garden had once bloomed.
Emma stopped.
She knew those columns.
Her mother had planted white climbing roses there every spring.
Her father used to complain that the thorns scratched his favorite jacket.
And Noah—
Noah had hidden his birthday treasures beneath the stone bench.
Emma covered her mouth.
"Oh, God."
Luca approached quietly.
"Do you need a minute?"
She shook her head.
"I remember it."
"What?"
"The roses."
She pointed toward the collapsed north wall.
"Mom grew them there."
Luca looked at the note in his hand.
The evidence is behind the roses.
Marco signaled his team forward.
"Check the perimeter."
Two guards moved toward the old greenhouse.
Another pair entered the ruins.
Luca and Emma approached the north wall.
Most of the plaster had fallen away, exposing layers of red brick.
Dead vines clung to the surface.
At the base stood a cracked stone planter carved with small roses.
Emma knelt.
Her fingers traced the flowers.
"My mother made this."
Luca crouched beside her.
"Are you certain?"
"She used to let me paint the roses."
She pointed to a faint patch of blue beneath the dirt.
"I spilled paint here when I was eight."
Luca studied the planter.
Then noticed something unusual.
The carving contained a small circular opening.
Almost invisible beneath the dust.
He removed the brass key from his pocket.
Emma held her breath.
The key slid into the opening.
It turned.
A metallic click echoed beneath the stone.
Then part of the planter shifted.
Noah stepped closer.
"What is that?"
Luca pulled the front panel open.
Inside was a metal compartment.
And inside that compartment sat a waterproof black case.
Emma stared.
"My father's records."
Luca carefully lifted it out.
The case was heavier than expected.
He placed it on the stone bench and opened the clasps.
Inside were dozens of documents, several old data-storage devices, photographs, and a handwritten ledger.
At the bottom lay a sealed envelope.
For Luca Moretti.
Luca stared at his name.
His father had died six years earlier.
He had believed there was nothing left to say between them.
Now he opened the envelope with trembling fingers.
My son,
If you are reading this, then Elena has done what I was too frightened to do. She has chosen the truth over our family's reputation.
For years, I let my brother control me through threats against you and your mother. I told myself silence was protection. In truth, my silence allowed innocent people to suffer.
Richard Whitcomb discovered Vittorio's laundering operation and brought the evidence to me. I intended to expose my brother. Vittorio found out first.
He took Richard. He arranged the fire. He made me believe the Whitcomb family had died because I failed to act.
I cannot undo what happened. I can only leave the truth where Vittorio will never think to look.
Do not inherit my cowardice, Luca.
The family name means nothing if keeping it requires destroying innocent lives.
Protect Emma and Noah if they survived.
And if Richard is still alive, bring him home.
Your father.
Luca stopped reading.
For several minutes, nobody spoke.
Then Emma reached for his hand.
He looked at her.
Her eyes were filled with tears.
"My father trusted yours."
Luca nodded slowly.
"And mine failed him."
"Your father was afraid."
"That doesn't excuse everything."
"No."
Emma squeezed his hand.
"But it means he wanted you to be better."
Luca looked at the ruins.
For the first time, he didn't see a monument to his family's power.
He saw the wreckage that power had created.
Then Marco's voice crackled over the radio.
"Boss, we have movement."
Luca straightened.
"Where?"
"South entrance. Multiple vehicles."
A pause.
"Four SUVs."
Luca immediately pulled Emma behind the stone wall.
"Get everyone back to the cars."
But the exit was already blocked.
Black SUVs rolled through the gate.
Armed men stepped out.
Their faces were hidden beneath dark caps.
And from the rear vehicle emerged a woman in a cream-colored coat.
Bianca Romano.
Emma stared.
"How did she get out?"
Luca's expression hardened.
"Someone helped her."
Bianca removed her sunglasses.
Her smile was radiant.
"Hello, darling."
Luca stepped forward.
"Bianca."
She looked around at the ruins.
"Oh, this place is depressing."
Marco's team moved into defensive positions.
Bianca raised a hand.
"I wouldn't."
She lifted a small electronic device.
A red indicator glowed on its surface.
Luca recognized it immediately.
A remote detonator.
Bianca saw his expression and smiled wider.
"Good. Now I have your attention."
She gestured toward the ruined building.
"Your uncle told me the evidence was here. I assumed you would eventually figure it out."
Luca held the black case behind his back.
"What do you want?"
"Everything that belonged to Elena."
"None of it belongs to you."
Bianca laughed.
"Please. I'm practically family."
"You stopped being family when you hurt Emma."
Her smile twisted.
"That little maid again."
Emma stepped from behind Luca.
"My name is Emma Whitcomb."
Bianca's eyes flashed.
"Oh, I know."
She lowered the detonator slightly.
"Your family has caused me more trouble than you can imagine."
Noah moved beside Emma.
"You kidnapped our father."
"Vittorio did."
"You helped him."
Bianca shrugged.
"I helped myself."
Luca stared at the woman he had once planned to marry.
He remembered expensive dinners.
Her laughter.
Her hand resting on his arm during charity galas.
The way she kissed him goodbye before business trips.
He had mistaken ambition for confidence.
Manipulation for affection.
Greed for love.
"What was the plan?" he asked.
Bianca tilted her head.
"Which plan?"
"The wedding."
She smiled.
"Oh, Luca. You were supposed to be a wonderful husband."
"And then?"
"Then you were supposed to die."
Emma gasped.
Bianca continued as calmly as if discussing a honeymoon.
"Nothing dramatic. A heart condition. An unfortunate reaction to medication. A grieving widow inheriting everything."
Luca felt something inside him go completely still.
"And my mother?"
Bianca rolled her eyes.
"Elena insisted on making things difficult."
"She was trying to protect innocent people."
"She was trying to take away what I deserved."
Luca stared at her.
"You deserved nothing."
Bianca's face hardened.
"Give me the case."
"No."
She lifted the detonator.
"Don't test me."
A low mechanical beep echoed from somewhere inside the ruins.
Then another.
Marco's expression changed.
"Boss."
Luca looked at him.
"Explosives?"
Marco nodded.
"Several charges. Possibly wired through the structure."
Bianca smiled.
"One little button."
Luca stared at the device in her hand.
Then at Emma.
She was standing beside the stone bench, her face pale but determined.
He knew he could overpower Bianca if he got close enough.
But she had four armed men.
And the detonator.
He couldn't risk it.
"All right," he said.
Bianca brightened.
"That's better."
Luca placed the black case on the ground.
Then pushed it toward her.
"Take it."
Bianca signaled one of her men.
The guard approached.
He bent to retrieve the case.
And suddenly, Noah shouted:
"Emma, behind you!"
A section of the old north wall gave way.
Bricks collapsed.
Dust exploded into the air.
Emma stumbled backward.
Luca lunged toward her.
He caught her around the waist just as the stone planter shattered.
They fell together behind the bench.
A deafening crash echoed through the courtyard.
Bianca screamed.
For one chaotic moment, everyone moved.
Marco's team secured the nearest attackers.
The detonator slipped from Bianca's fingers.
It struck the broken pavement.
And the red indicator began flashing.
Luca stared at it.
A countdown appeared.
00:15.
00:14.
00:13.
"Everybody out!" Marco shouted.
Luca grabbed Emma's hand.
They ran toward the greenhouse.
Noah followed.
The ground trembled.
00:08.
00:07.
Emma tripped.
Luca pulled her upright.
00:04.
They dove behind a low stone retaining wall.
Then Blackthorn House exploded.
The sound tore across the property.
Flames swallowed the ruined upper floor.
Broken stone rained down.
A shock wave blasted dust across the lawn.
Luca curled his body around Emma.
For several seconds, he heard nothing but ringing.
Then her voice reached him.
"Luca?"
He lifted his head.
She was alive.
Bruised.
Covered in dust.
But alive.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
He pulled her against him.
For the first time in years, he was shaking.
Not because he feared dying.
Because he had come within seconds of losing her.
Emma looked at his face.
And whispered:
"Why did you come back for me?"
Luca stared at her.
He had no answer that made sense.
Not yet.
May you like
Behind them, flames devoured the remains of Blackthorn.
And somewhere beyond the smoke, Bianca Romano was gone.
