Chapter 8 - THE PRICE OF SILENCEIvan wanted to call his son immediately.

Maya stopped him.

“If Caldwell is watching Ethan, a sudden police presence could make him react.”

“So I do nothing?”

“No. We protect him quietly.”

Federal agents in Boston were dispatched in plain clothes.

Ethan was moved without being told the full reason.

Ivan hated every second.

Caldwell sent another message.

MIDNIGHT. OLD RIVERSIDE CLINIC. LAURA ALONE. NO POLICE.

Laura laughed when Maya showed her.

“No.”

Ivan looked at her.

“He threatened Ethan.”

“And if I go, he kills me.”

“I’m not suggesting—”

“You’re thinking it.”

“I’m thinking about every option.”

Laura studied him.

“You still feel guilty because Richard was your friend.”

Ivan didn’t answer.

“You think you should have seen it.”

“Maybe.”

“People who lie well survive by making decent people ashamed for believing them.”

Ivan looked at her.

She continued.

“Richard made choices. Caldwell made choices. Elise made choices. So did I.”

“You?”

“I knew Richard was stealing money before I told anyone.”

“Why?”

“Because I loved him.”

She smiled sadly.

“Love can make intelligent people negotiate with evidence.”

Richard woke at the surgical pavilion and was transferred under guard.

Ivan met him in a secure hospital room.

The two men stared at each other.

For the first time in their lives, neither knew how to begin.

Richard looked older than seventy.

“Ivan.”

“Don’t.”

Richard lowered his eyes.

“I deserve that.”

“You let people drug your wife.”

“I know.”

“You stole from her.”

“Yes.”

“You falsified pharmacy records.”

“Yes.”

“Were people killed?”

Richard’s face crumpled.

“I don’t know.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

“I never administered anything. I changed records. I covered shortages. Elise told me they were helping terminal patients who had uncontrolled pain.”

“You believed that?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

Richard cried silently.

“Later I stopped asking.”

Ivan stepped closer.

“That’s the part you’ll have to live with.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

Ivan’s voice cracked.

“Laura trusted you more than anyone alive.”

Richard covered his face.

“I know.”

“You were supposed to protect her.”

“I know.”

Ivan wanted to hit him.

Instead, he sat down.

“What does Caldwell want?”

“The original recording.”

“Why?”

“Because everything else can be challenged. Digital files, copies, emails—he’ll call them fabricated. But the tape captures him naming two patients.”

“Who?”

“His first victims.”

“Are they dead?”

“One is.”

“And the other?”

Richard looked up.

“Maya Brooks’s father.”

Ivan froze.

“Maya’s father died six years ago.”

“Caldwell targeted him decades earlier.”

“Why?”

“He was an accountant.”

Ivan understood.

“He discovered financial fraud.”

Richard nodded.

“But Caldwell didn’t kill him then. He threatened him. Years later, when Mr. Brooks had the stroke and ended up inside a Greenbridge facility, Caldwell finished what he’d started.”

Ivan felt sick.

“Does Maya know?”

“No.”

She soon did.

Maya listened without interrupting.

When Richard finished, she left the room.

Ivan found her in the stairwell.

She stood facing a concrete wall.

“I spent six years believing Dad had another stroke.”

Ivan said nothing.

“He kept trying to tell me something before he died. His speech was bad.”

“What did he say?”

“I thought he said ‘cold.’”

She turned.

“Maybe he said ‘Caldwell.’”

Her eyes were wet but her voice stayed steady.

Ivan understood then why Caldwell had planted records in his home.

Why he wanted evidence destroyed.

Why he had manipulated so many people.

He had survived for thirty years because everyone around him held only one piece.

Laura had the tape.

Richard knew the pharmacy records.

Elise knew the financial network.

Pike knew logistics.

Maya’s father knew the origin.

Caldwell had kept them separated.

Until now.

A plan formed.

Laura would appear to accept the meeting.

But she would not attend alone.

Federal agents fitted her with a transmitter.

Maya objected at first.

“She’s still recovering.”

Laura refused to back down.

“He tried to kill me once.”

“That’s exactly why—”

“And he thinks I’m afraid.”

“You are.”

“Yes.”

Laura met Maya’s eyes.

“But fear and obedience are not the same thing.”

Midnight arrived.

Old Riverside Clinic had been abandoned since flood damage seven years earlier.

Laura entered carrying a metal case.

Inside was a duplicate tape.

Agents surrounded the area out of sight.

Ivan watched from the command vehicle.

The transmitter crackled.

Footsteps.

Then Caldwell appeared.

No suit.

No polished hospital-board smile.

Just a gray jacket and a handgun.

“Elise?” Laura asked.

“Not your concern.”

“She’s dead?”

“No.”

“Where is she?”

Caldwell smiled.

“You always asked too many questions.”

Laura held up the case.

“The tape.”

“Put it down.”

“You threatened Ivan’s son.”

“A necessary incentive.”

“You poisoned me.”

“Jenna was overenthusiastic.”

“You ordered it.”

Caldwell’s expression changed.

“That’s a serious accusation.”

Laura understood what he was doing.

He suspected a wire.

She pushed.

“Richard told us.”

“Richard is a liar.”

“Then why are you here?”

“To retrieve stolen property.”

“You mean evidence.”

Caldwell smiled.

“Words matter, Laura.”

“So do recordings.”

His eyes dropped toward her blouse.

He stepped closer.

“Take off your coat.”

In the command vehicle, Maya whispered, “He knows.”

Laura slowly removed it.

Caldwell scanned her clothing.

“Turn around.”

She did.

“Lift your hair.”

She complied.

He saw the transmitter wire near her collar.

Everything exploded.

Caldwell grabbed Laura.

Agents moved.

A gunshot cracked through the building.

Ivan shouted her name.

Then silence.

The command feed went dead.

By the time Maya reached the room, Caldwell had disappeared through a maintenance tunnel.

Laura lay behind an overturned table.

Alive.

The bullet had struck the wall.

But Caldwell had taken the metal case.

And during the chaos, he had left something behind.

A phone.

It contained one unread message from Elise.

I HAVE THE ORIGINAL. NOT LAURA.

A second message followed before Maya could lock the device.

IF YOU WANT IT, COME HOME.

Elise had stopped running.

She was waiting for Caldwell.

At Mercer Family Pharmacy.

Where everything had started.
