Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN IN MY BEDROOMThe next morning, Daniel arrived at the hospital with a lawyer.

He wore a charcoal-gray suit.

His hair was perfectly styled.

His expensive watch gleamed beneath his cuff.

He looked exactly like the man I had married.

That was the most disturbing part.

The same face.

The same familiar eyes.

The same mouth that had once whispered promises against my forehead.

Now those lips were prepared to lie.

A nurse stopped him outside my room.

“My patient has requested no visitors.”

Daniel raised his voice.

“I'm her husband.”

“And she's declined your visit.”

I heard every word.

Rachel stood beside my bed.

“Do you want me to ask him to leave?”

I looked at the doorway.

“No.”

Rachel frowned.

“Emily—”

“I want to hear what he has to say.”

She studied me.

Then nodded.

“But I stay.”

“Of course.”

Daniel entered.

His attorney followed.

Margaret wasn't with him.

Neither was Vanessa.

For one ridiculous second, I felt disappointed.

Some broken part of me had wanted Daniel to come alone.

Not because I hoped he'd apologize.

Because I wanted proof that the man I loved had existed at all.

He looked at my bandaged wrist.

Then my bruised face.

His expression flickered.

“Emily.”

I waited.

He cleared his throat.

“You look terrible.”

Rachel folded her arms.

“Charming opening.”

Daniel ignored her.

“I've spoken to Mother. She says the situation got out of control.”

I stared at him.

“Is that what we're calling attempted murder now?”

His lawyer shifted uncomfortably.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we shouldn't use inflammatory terms before the investigation is complete.”

Rachel smiled without warmth.

“Then your client should choose his next words carefully.”

Daniel pulled a chair closer.

“Emily, we need to stop this.”

“Stop what?”

“The accusations. The police. The ridiculous rumors.”

I looked at his attorney.

“Did he tell you I was pregnant?”

The man hesitated.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Emily—”

“Did he tell you I lost our baby?”

His attorney looked at Daniel.

Apparently, he hadn't.

I laughed bitterly.

“Of course not.”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Can we discuss this privately?”

“No.”

“Rachel doesn't need to hear everything.”

“She does.”

He leaned forward.

“Listen. My mother is willing to apologize for the argument.”

I stared.

“The argument?”

“She admits things became heated.”

“She pushed me down the stairs.”

“She says you lost your balance.”

I looked him directly in the eye.

“Do you believe her?”

He hesitated.

Just long enough.

“Mother wouldn't deliberately hurt you.”

Something inside me settled.

For six years, I had waited for Daniel to choose me.

He never had.

Now I finally understood.

He wasn't confused.

He wasn't trapped between his wife and mother.

He was exactly where he wanted to be.

I reached for the bedside table.

Picked up a folder.

And placed it between us.

Daniel frowned.

“What's that?”

“Divorce papers.”

His face changed.

“You can't be serious.”

“I am.”

He laughed.

“You're lying in a hospital bed, Emily. You're not thinking clearly.”

Rachel spoke calmly.

“She is competent to make legal decisions, Daniel.”

He ignored her.

“Do you honestly believe you can survive without me?”

I felt heat rise in my cheeks.

There it was.

The sentence I had feared for years.

Not I love you.

Not Please stay.

Just the certainty that I needed him.

I looked at his watch.

His shoes.

His perfectly tailored suit.

Then I remembered my grandmother's necklace around Vanessa's neck.

“I survived thirty-two years before I met you,” I said.

His smile disappeared.

“I think I'll manage the rest.”

Daniel pushed the folder away.

“I'm not signing anything.”

“You don't have to sign today.”

He leaned close.

“Do you have any idea what a divorce from me will cost you?”

Rachel stepped forward.

“That's enough.”

He looked at her.

“You've been poisoning her against me.”

Rachel didn't blink.

“No, Daniel. You've done that yourself.”

His attorney touched his sleeve.

“We should go.”

But Daniel wasn't finished.

He pointed toward me.

“You think people will believe your story? My mother is respected throughout Connecticut. The Whitmore name means something.”

I stared at him.

“So does evidence.”

His expression shifted.

For one second, I saw fear.

Then he straightened.

“You have no evidence.”

He walked toward the door.

I waited until his hand touched the handle.

“Daniel?”

He turned.

“Tell Vanessa I want my grandmother's necklace back.”

His face drained of color.

“How do you know she has it?”

“She photographed herself wearing it in my bedroom.”

Rachel smiled.

“And sent the photograph directly to Emily.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

He understood the problem immediately.

The photograph connected Vanessa to the mansion.

It showed her handling my property.

And it proved that the affair continued while I was hospitalized.

“She's an idiot,” he muttered.

I shook my head.

“No, Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“She learned from you.”

After he left, Rachel sat down.

“You handled that well.”

I stared at the closed door.

My hands were shaking.

“I wanted to scream.”

“I know.”

“I wanted to ask why he stopped loving me.”

Rachel's expression softened.

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Why not?”

I looked down.

“Because I finally understand that whatever answer he gives would only be another excuse.”

Rachel squeezed my hand.

That afternoon, Detective Reed called.

“We have new information about Rosa Martinez.”

I sat upright.

“Is she safe?”

“We believe so.”

“Where is she?”

“She contacted a relative in New Jersey.”

Relief flooded through me.

“Can I speak to her?”

“Not yet. She's frightened, and we're arranging a formal interview.”

I closed my eyes.

“Thank God.”

Reed paused.

“Emily, there's something else you should know.”

My stomach tightened.

“About Rosa?”

“Yes.”

“She saw Margaret push me?”

“She says she did.”

I covered my mouth.

Tears filled my eyes.

After days of lies, someone had finally confirmed the truth.

But Reed continued.

“She also says Daniel came to the house afterward.”

I froze.

“When?”

“Approximately ten minutes after your fall.”

My heart hammered.

Daniel had been there.

Not in Manhattan.

Not celebrating at a restaurant.

At the mansion.

While I lay on the floor.

“Did he help me?”

Reed didn't answer immediately.

I already knew.

“What did he do?” I whispered.

“Rosa says he argued with Margaret.”

“About calling an ambulance?”

“About a document.”

I stared into space.

“What document?”

“We're trying to establish that.”

Then Reed lowered his voice.

“Rosa heard Daniel tell his mother that if Emily woke up before they finished, everything would be ruined.”

I couldn't breathe.

My husband had not merely abandoned me.

He had seen me hurt.

He had known I needed help.

And he had been worried about paperwork.

Then Detective Reed said the words that turned my grief into fury.

“Rosa also says Daniel took your hand while you were unconscious.”

I looked toward Rachel.

My mouth barely moved.

“Why?”

Reed answered.

“He pressed your thumb against something.”

The forged statement.

My supposed consent.

My surrender.

I stared at the bruises on my hand.

They hadn't just tried to erase my future.

May you like

They had tried to steal my identity while I lay helpless on the floor.

And now I knew exactly how.
