Chương 6 - The Forgotten RussoMateo Russo didn't need to be physically present to control the room.

His face filled the warehouse wall.

Behind him was darkness.

Nothing revealed his location.

Dominic stepped toward the projection.

“You threatened my children.”

Mateo smiled.

“Your children threatened me first.”

“They're three years old.”

“They represent a claim.”

“They represent themselves.”

“That is exactly the kind of sentimental nonsense your father taught you after he became respectable.”

Dominic glanced at Vittorio.

“My father taught me plenty of things. Respectability wasn't one of them.”

Vittorio didn't react.

His eyes were fixed on Mateo.

“You're Carlo's son.”

Mateo's smile hardened.

“Congratulations. It only took twenty-nine years.”

Vittorio looked shaken.

“Your mother told us the baby died.”

“My mother told you what Carlo ordered her to tell you.”

Dominic glanced at the photograph.

“My mother?”

Mateo looked at him.

“That part shocked you, didn't it?”

“She's dead.”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Actually?”

Dominic went still.

Mateo's expression became almost sympathetic.

“Eleven years ago.”

Dominic stared at his father.

Vittorio looked devastated.

“You told me she died when I was born.”

“She had to disappear.”

The hypocrisy was so staggering I almost laughed.

Dominic's face turned blank.

“You did to her what you did to Elena.”

“No.”

“What difference?”

“Your mother was in danger.”

“So was Elena.”

“I gave Elena a choice.”

“You gave her a threat wrapped around a check.”

Vittorio had no answer.

Mateo watched with visible satisfaction.

“This family really does repeat itself.”

I stepped forward.

“Why are you threatening my sons?”

Mateo looked at me.

“Because legally, Elena, your boys inherited something that should have been mine.”

“They inherited nothing. They're toddlers.”

“Not according to Alessandro Russo's trust.”

“The trust doesn't matter to me.”

“That must be convenient when you already possess ninety-four million dollars.”

“I never wanted that money.”

“No. You merely kept it.”

That landed.

I hated that it did.

Mateo continued.

“My father spent his life believing he would eventually control the Russo estate. Then Dominic came along. The perfect son of the perfect brother.”

Dominic laughed bitterly.

“Perfect?”

“To my father? Yes.”

Mateo leaned closer to his camera.

“Then I was born. Secret. Illegitimate. Inconvenient.”

“What do you want?” Dominic asked.

“Recognition.”

“You kidnapped Celeste for recognition?”

“I rescued Celeste from someone else.”

Celeste stiffened.

“What?”

Mateo looked toward her.

“The men who grabbed you weren't mine.”

“Then how did I end up here?”

“I intercepted them.”

The room shifted again.

“Who were they?” Gabriel asked.

Mateo smiled.

“You're the professional. Figure it out.”

Dominic stepped closer.

“Enough games.”

“Agreed.”

The projector image changed.

Security footage appeared.

A hospital corridor.

Our sons.

My heart stopped.

The video was live.

Luca sat coloring.

Noah slept.

Samuel drank juice beside Dr. Patel.

Dominic's voice dropped.

“If anyone touches them—”

“They won't.”

“How do you have access?”

“I don't. Someone else does.”

A timestamp flashed.

Live.

Mateo said, “I brought you here because I needed all of you away from the hospital.”

My knees nearly gave out.

Dominic grabbed his phone.

No signal.

Gabriel checked his.

Nothing.

Mateo continued.

“The building is being jammed.”

Dominic turned toward the doors.

They slammed shut automatically.

Metal shutters dropped over the windows.

Vittorio cursed.

Mateo's voice filled the darkness.

“Now perhaps you'll listen.”

Dominic shouted at the camera.

“Open the doors.”

“Not until you understand.”

The footage zoomed toward a man wearing hospital scrubs.

He moved down the corridor toward the family suite.

I recognized him.

One of the hotel staff from the wedding.

He had been standing beside the service elevator.

My blood froze.

“Who is he?”

Mateo answered.

“Anthony Bell's son.”

The dead attorney's son.

“Name?”

“Daniel Bell.”

“Why is he near my children?”

“Because his father wasn't merely Carlo's attorney.”

Mateo changed the screen again.

Old corporate records.

“Anthony Bell created Arden's network. He moved money. Bribed officials. Organized surveillance. When Carlo died, Bell became the only person who knew where every account was hidden.”

Vittorio's expression changed.

“And then Bell died.”

“Yes.”

“Who killed him?”

Mateo smiled faintly.

“You.”

Vittorio stared.

“I did not.”

“Not personally. But your cleanup team burned his house after discovering he had kept records.”

Dominic looked disgusted.

“Is there anyone in this family you didn't destroy?”

Vittorio ignored him.

“If Bell's son survived—”

“He inherited the records. And the anger.”

On the hospital footage, Daniel Bell reached the security checkpoint.

Dominic slammed his fist against the warehouse door.

“Open it!”

Mateo said, “Watch.”

Bell presented credentials.

A guard scanned them.

Red light.

Rejected.

Bell tried again.

Then the guard stepped forward.

Marcus appeared on screen behind him.

My knees weakened with relief.

Marcus grabbed Bell's arm.

Security surrounded him.

Mateo's projection switched back to his face.

“He was arrested thirty seconds ago.”

Dominic stared.

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You used my children as bait.”

“No. I used his certainty that they were unprotected.”

Dominic's voice became lethal.

“They were never unprotected.”

Mateo nodded.

“That may be the first intelligent thing you've said tonight.”

The warehouse doors unlocked.

Dominic rushed outside.

We followed.

By the time we reached the hospital, Daniel Bell was in police custody.

But the larger truth had begun surfacing.

Bell's phone contained years of surveillance.

Photographs of me in Switzerland.

Celeste in Boston.

Dominic.

Vittorio.

Even Mateo.

He had been watching everyone.

Yet Marcus found something else.

Messages proving Bell wasn't acting alone.

Someone referred to only as C.

Dominic assumed Carlo.

But Carlo had been dead two years.

The messages were recent.

C was alive.

We gathered in a secured conference room while federal investigators took over.

A detective asked why this family appeared connected to three decades of financial crimes.

Vittorio requested an attorney.

Dominic did not.

“I'll give you everything,” he said.

His father stared at him.

“What?”

“Everything.”

“Dominic, think carefully.”

“I have.”

“You expose our records and you destroy the company.”

“The legitimate companies will survive.”

“The family will not.”

Dominic looked toward the room where our sons were sleeping.

“My family is in there.”

It was the first time he drew the line publicly.

Vittorio fell silent.

Investigators began collecting the documents recovered from the warehouse.

Celeste sat beside me.

Her wedding makeup had streaked beneath her eyes.

“I owe you an apology,” she said.

“For what?”

“I knew enough to find you. I should have told Dominic.”

“You were threatened.”

“So were you.”

We shared a strange look.

Two women who had both been manipulated by the same family's secrets.

“Did you love him?” I asked.

She smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

My heart tightened.

“But not enough to marry a man who looked at the ballroom doors every time they opened.”

I looked down.

“He was waiting for you, Elena. Even when he didn't know it.”

Before I could answer, Dominic entered.

He looked exhausted.

“The DNA petition.”

Celeste stood.

“I filed it.”

“Why?”

“To protect the boys.”

“How does forcing legal paternity protect them?”

“Because the trust has another clause.”

Vittorio's head snapped up.

“What clause?”

Celeste reached into the recovered folder.

“If an heir is threatened because of the trust, the assets can be frozen by court order once parentage is established.”

Dominic understood immediately.

“No one gets control.”

“Exactly.”

“No one can profit from harming them.”

“Exactly.”

Vittorio stared at Celeste.

“You found that?”

“Your lawyers should read their own paperwork.”

Despite everything, I nearly smiled.

Dominic looked at me.

“Do you consent to the test?”

The question was enormous.

Not biologically.

I knew who their father was.

Legally, it would change everything.

Dominic was asking to step permanently into their lives.

I thought of Luca asking whether he would come back.

Of Samuel holding his finger.

Of Noah trusting him after a single night.

“Yes.”

Dominic exhaled slowly.

“Okay.”

The test was expedited.

The result came the following afternoon.

99.99 percent probability.

Dominic Russo was the biological father of Luca, Noah, and Samuel Marlowe.

He stared at the report for several minutes.

Then folded it carefully and placed it inside his jacket.

“What are you doing?” I asked.

“Keeping the first thing that legally says they're mine.”

Something in my chest broke open.

But before either of us could say more, Marcus entered carrying a tablet.

“We identified C.”

Dominic looked up.

“Who?”

Marcus hesitated.

Then placed an old family photograph on the screen.

A woman.

Beautiful.

Dark hair.

Dominic's eyes.

His mother.

“That's impossible,” Dominic whispered.

Marcus swallowed.

“Apparently not.”

The woman Vittorio said had died eleven years ago had just used a passport at Logan International Airport.

And according to airport security footage, she was headed directly toward us.
