Chapter 8 - THE SIGNATURE THAT COULD STEAL EVERYTHINGThe forged signature looked almost perfect.

Almost.

Julian had spent eleven years watching me sign checks, school forms, holiday cards, and charity donations.

He knew how I wrote the C in Caroline.

He knew the narrow loops in my last name.

He even knew that I always pressed harder on the final letter.

But he had missed one detail.

Since breaking my right wrist in a car accident five years earlier, I had changed the way I signed important legal documents.

My old signature ended with a long underline.

My new one didn't.

The document on Julian's desk had that underline.

"That's not my signature," I said.

Eleanor leaned toward the security monitor.

"Are you certain?"

"Completely."

Alexander looked at Marcus.

"Preserve every second of that footage."

"Already underway."

Eleanor contacted the appropriate authorities and forwarded the information through the established investigative channels.

The document appeared to be a purported durable power of attorney.

If accepted as genuine, it might allow Julian to take actions regarding certain financial accounts.

But it wouldn't automatically give him legal ownership of my assets.

It would need to withstand verification, and the suspected forgery itself was a serious matter.

Still, the implications terrified me.

"He was going to steal from me," I whispered.

Eleanor nodded.

"That's what the evidence suggests."

Alexander placed his hand on my shoulder.

"Caroline, I need you to understand something."

I looked at him.

"Your trust is worth considerably more than you realize."

My stomach tightened.

"How much?"

He hesitated.

"Based on the most recent valuation, approximately four-point-six billion dollars."

For a moment, the room seemed to disappear.

Four.

Point.

Six.

Billion.

I sat down.

"That's impossible."

Alexander shook his head.

"Mom's original shares appreciated dramatically over the years. Dad's investments grew. And the debt portfolio became extremely valuable."

I stared at him.

"Why was I never told?"

"You received annual reports."

I laughed bitterly.

"Reports Julian insisted our accountant handle because he said I wasn't good with numbers."

Alexander lowered his eyes.

I thought about the tiny monthly allowance Julian gave me.

The humiliating arguments over grocery receipts.

The nights he accused me of being a financial burden.

All while a fortune sat in a trust bearing my name.

And I hadn't even known its value.

I covered my face.

"Oh God."

Eleanor moved closer.

"Caroline, you were entitled to accurate information. We're going to review the administration of the trust and make sure you receive it."

I looked at Alexander.

"Did you personally hide this from me?"

He took a long breath.

"I didn't falsify anything. The statements were available, but I relied on your designated advisers to explain them. That was a mistake."

"You let Julian manage the communication."

"Yes."

I stood.

"After everything you knew about his family?"

Alexander said nothing.

For the first time, I understood that loving someone didn't prevent you from failing them.

My brother had saved my daughter.

He'd stood beside me.

He'd helped me escape.

But he'd also made decisions about my financial life without ensuring I understood them.

And that needed to change.

"I want full access to every record," I said.

"You'll have it."

"I want independent advisers."

"Of course."

"And I want to make my own decisions."

Alexander met my eyes.

"That's exactly what you should do."

I nodded.

Something shifted inside me.

For eleven years, I had been Julian's wife.

Before that, I'd been Alexander Sterling's little sister.

Now, for the first time, I wanted to find out who Caroline actually was.

That afternoon, Eleanor helped me arrange separate legal and financial representation for my personal affairs.

My first instruction was simple.

Review every document Julian had ever asked me to sign.

My second instruction was even simpler.

Make sure Penny's future could never be controlled by anyone who threatened her safety.

By evening, investigators had secured the questionable power-of-attorney document and relevant footage.

But there was another surprise.

Marcus entered the study carrying a tablet.

"Caroline, there's someone who wants to speak with you."

"Who?"

"Vanessa."

I hesitated.

After her courtroom lies, I had avoided speaking with her.

She had helped Julian torment me.

She had laughed while my daughter suffered.

A confession couldn't erase that.

But she'd also begun cooperating with investigators.

"Is she safe?" I asked.

"She's under protective arrangements while authorities evaluate threats related to her testimony."

I nodded.

"Put her through."

Her face appeared on the screen.

Without expensive makeup or emerald gowns, she looked exhausted.

There were dark circles beneath her eyes.

"Caroline."

I said nothing.

"I know you probably hate me."

"I don't know what I feel."

She nodded.

"That's fair."

A long silence followed.

Then she began crying.

"I want to tell you everything."

I crossed my arms.

"Start with why you helped him hurt my daughter."

Vanessa lowered her head.

"Charles told me that Penny was being raised to inherit everything my mother should have left me."

I stared.

"What?"

"He convinced me you had married Julian to protect the Blackwood money and erase Claire's child."

"That's insane."

"I know."

"Did you believe that justified locking a six-year-old in a basement?"

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"No."

"Then why did you stand there?"

She began shaking.

"Because I was cruel. Because I wanted someone to blame. Because I let myself believe horrible things about a child who had never harmed me."

For the first time, she didn't make excuses.

She simply admitted what she'd done.

I looked away.

"Your apology won't undo Penny's fear."

"I know."

"She wakes up screaming."

Vanessa covered her mouth.

"I know."

"You don't know," I replied. "You weren't the one holding her while she cried because she thought her father would lock her away again."

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

"I'm sorry."

I let the silence sit between us.

Finally, I asked, "What did you want to tell me?"

She wiped her cheeks.

"Julian knew about your trust."

"I know."

"He planned to take control of it."

"I know that too."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No. You don't understand."

She leaned closer.

"He wasn't only trying to obtain your signature."

My stomach tightened.

"What was he planning?"

"Charles told him that if you were declared mentally incapable of handling your affairs, he could petition to gain legal authority over certain decisions."

I felt a chill.

"He wanted to have me declared incompetent?"

Vanessa nodded.

"He was collecting videos."

"What videos?"

"Arguments. Moments when you cried. Times when you became upset after he deliberately provoked you."

I remembered Julian holding his phone during fights.

I remembered him telling me to calm down while continuing to insult me.

He'd been building a false narrative.

A story in which I was unstable.

Unreliable.

Dangerous.

And he was the loving husband trying to protect his family.

My hands began trembling.

Vanessa continued.

"He wanted your brother to look like he was manipulating you. Charles planned to use that claim in court."

"Why tell me now?"

"Because Charles promised me something."

"What?"

"He said that if I helped Julian gain control of your assets, he'd tell me the truth about my mother."

I stared at her.

"And did he?"

She nodded.

"He told me he was there when she died."

My blood ran cold.

"Claire?"

Vanessa began crying again.

"She didn't die in that car accident the way they said."

I leaned toward the screen.

"Then what happened?"

Vanessa looked directly at me.

"Her car was forced off the road."

"By whom?"

"I don't know. But Charles admitted he arranged for someone to follow her that night. He said he only wanted the documents back."

I felt sick.

Vanessa continued.

"He kept saying it wasn't supposed to happen."

I closed my eyes.

Another woman.

Another death.

Another Blackwood secret.

Then Vanessa whispered, "There's one more thing."

I looked up.

"What?"

"When Julian realized you weren't going to sign the papers, he said he needed a different solution."

"What solution?"

Vanessa hesitated.

"Charles told him there was only one way to get what he wanted."

My chest tightened.

Vanessa's voice dropped.

"He said he needed to make sure you never got the chance to testify."

For a moment, I couldn't speak.

Then I asked the only question that mattered.

"Does Julian know where Penny and I are staying?"

Vanessa's eyes widened.

"Caroline..."

"Answer me."

She swallowed.

"Yes."

At that exact moment, every light in Alexander's house went out.

The screen went black.

Somewhere downstairs, a security alarm began screaming.

May you like

And from Penny's bedroom came a terrified cry.

"Mommy!"
