Chapter 4 - THE MAN BEHIND MY HUSBANDGavin Pierce refused to say another word after that.

His lawyer arrived within forty minutes.

Julian demanded separate counsel.

Selena asked for a deal before anyone had even formally charged her.

And I realized the marriage I thought I was trying to understand was only the front door to something much larger.

Julian spent his first night in custody at the county detention center.

By morning, his photograph was everywhere.

TECH CEO ARRESTED IN WIFE’S ATTEMPTED MURDER.

MILLIONAIRE HUSBAND ACCUSED OF STABBING MISSING WIFE.

CLAIRE VANCE ALIVE, SOURCES CONFIRM.

There was no hiding me anymore.

The courthouse leak spread before sunrise.

By breakfast, satellite trucks surrounded St. Catherine’s.

My room was moved again.

Hospital security stationed two officers outside.

The woman at the center of the story—the supposedly dead wife—had become the most valuable witness in the state.

And perhaps a target.

Detective Hale arrived carrying two coffees.

“You drink coffee?”

“Currently I drink ice chips.”

He looked at my IV.

“Right.”

He set both cups down.

“More for me.”

“What did Gavin mean?”

“No idea.”

“You have an idea.”

He pulled up a chair.

“We found something at Vance Dynamics.”

“What?”

“A second accounting system.”

I stared at him.

“You mean fake books?”

“I mean two companies occupying the same legal shell. One is the public business investors see. The other routes money through vendors, overseas consulting firms, political organizations, real estate vehicles.”

“Money laundering?”

“Possibly.”

“For whom?”

“That’s the sixty-million-dollar question.”

“Eighty million.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“You’re recovering fast.”

“Being nearly murdered improved my attention span.”

That made him smile.

Briefly.

Then he became serious.

“Gavin has been CFO for nine years.”

“Before Julian became CEO.”

“Exactly.”

Julian had inherited Vance Dynamics from his father, Harrison Vance, who died suddenly from a heart attack four years earlier.

At least, everyone had believed it was a heart attack.

My mind immediately went somewhere dark.

“Harrison?”

“We’re not reopening a death without evidence.”

“But you’re thinking about it.”

“I think about everything.”

Hale showed me a photograph.

Gavin stood at a charity dinner beside Harrison Vance.

On Harrison’s other side was a man I recognized immediately.

“Senator Whitmore.”

“Former senator.”

“Why is this important?”

“Because Whitmore’s foundation received four million dollars from one of the shell companies.”

My father had prosecuted political corruption for years.

I knew enough to understand what Hale wasn’t saying.

“Bribes?”

“Maybe.”

“Blackmail?”

“Maybe.”

“Then what?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

My door opened.

Maya Brooks entered.

Her expression told me something had happened.

“Selena wants to talk.”

“Already?”

“She’s terrified.”

“Of prison?”

Maya looked at Hale.

“Of Gavin.”

Selena’s interview began at 10:15 a.m.

I wasn’t allowed to watch live.

Maya later walked me through every detail.

Selena met Julian eighteen months earlier when Vance Dynamics hired her as director of strategic partnerships.

Their affair began four months later.

“He told me his marriage was over,” Selena said.

The oldest sentence in the adultery handbook.

“He said Claire controlled everything. The money. His family. The board.”

“Did you believe him?”

“Yes.”

“Did you ever meet Claire?”

“At events.”

“And did she behave like someone controlling her husband?”

Selena lowered her eyes.

“No.”

“Did that concern you?”

“I thought Julian was protecting appearances.”

“When did he first discuss Claire’s death?”

Selena began crying.

“Not death.”

“What word did he use?”

“Exit.”

Maya slid a tissue box toward her.

“What did that mean?”

“I thought divorce.”

“Selena.”

“I swear.”

“When did you realize otherwise?”

A long silence.

“Two weeks before the attack.”

“What happened?”

“Gavin called me into his office.”

“Why?”

“He knew about me and Julian.”

“What did he say?”

Selena rubbed her palms together.

“He said loving Julian meant understanding what Julian needed to survive.”

“What did Julian need?”

“Control of Claire’s shares.”

“And what did Gavin ask you to do?”

“Convince Julian that Claire would destroy him if she discovered the money.”

Maya leaned back.

“So Gavin wanted Julian frightened.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Gavin order Claire killed?”

“No.”

“Did Julian?”

Selena’s voice shook.

“No. Not then.”

“What changed?”

“The night Claire confronted us.”

Selena admitted she had gone to my house because Julian told her I had discovered a financial transfer.

That wasn’t entirely true.

I had discovered several strange withdrawals, but the full extent of the fraud was still hidden.

“Julian was panicking,” Selena said.

“He kept saying Gavin would ruin him.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Gavin have something on him?”

“Yes.”

“What?”

“I never found out.”

Then Maya asked about the moment that mattered.

“Claire was on the kitchen floor after the first wound. Why did you say, ‘If she lives, she’ll tell them’?”

Selena began sobbing.

“I was scared.”

“You understood what your words might cause.”

“I didn’t think he’d do it again.”

“But he did.”

“Yes.”

“And you didn’t call 911.”

“No.”

“You helped him take Claire’s phone.”

“Yes.”

“You helped him leave.”

“Yes.”

“You later participated in an attempt to claim her assets.”

Selena looked up.

“Because Gavin said if we didn’t, Claire would have died for nothing.”

Maya went still.

“He said that?”

“Yes.”

“Exact words?”

Selena nodded.

“If you don’t finish what she died for, then this was all for nothing.”

Gavin had known I had been attacked before police announced anything.

“How?”

Maya asked.

Selena whispered:

“Julian called him from our driveway.”

That call existed.

Twenty-three seconds.

It had occurred six minutes before Noah’s 911 call.

Julian hadn’t called emergency services.

He had called his CFO.

What Gavin told him during those twenty-three seconds became one of the central mysteries of the investigation.

Julian refused to explain.

Until his bail hearing.

The courtroom was packed.

My doctors would not allow me to attend, so I watched from a private hospital conference room.

Julian entered wearing a county-issued jumpsuit.

I expected hatred.

Instead, seeing him shackled made me remember stupid things.

His hands kneading pizza dough on our first anniversary.

His head on my lap during thunderstorms because he pretended he wasn’t afraid of them.

The way he cried when our old golden retriever died.

People are complicated that way.

Someone can love you in one chapter and become your greatest danger in another.

The judge denied bail.

Flight risk.

Witness intimidation.

Severity of charges.

Julian’s attorney immediately requested a private conference with prosecutors.

An hour later, Maya came to see me.

“He wants a deal.”

“For what?”

“Information.”

“About Gavin?”

“Yes.”

“What does he want?”

“Protection.”

I almost laughed.

“He stabbed me twice and wants protection?”

“People tend to rediscover the value of safety once they’re the ones in danger.”

“What does Gavin have on him?”

Maya hesitated.

“Julian says Gavin orchestrated financial crimes using Vance Dynamics for years.”

“Did Julian participate?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough to go to federal prison for a long time.”

“So he married me for Bennett money.”

Maya’s silence answered.

Something inside me cracked despite everything I already knew.

“Was any of it real?”

“That’s a question only Julian can answer.”

I looked away.

“No. It’s a question I’m done asking.”

Maya placed a small audio recorder on the table.

“He recorded a statement.”

“I don’t want to hear an apology.”

“It isn’t one.”

I pressed play.

Julian’s voice filled the room.

“Claire, if they let you hear this, Gavin knows more about your family than you do.”

I froze.

“Your grandfather didn’t choose Vance Dynamics randomly. Bennett Holdings invested because our fathers had a deal.”

A rustle of paper.

“My father tried to end it. Three weeks later, he died.”

My heart began pounding.

“I thought Gavin was threatening me with prison. I was wrong.”

His voice lowered.

“He was threatening you.”

I looked at Maya.

The recording continued.

“There’s a file called Blackbird. Gavin keeps it offline. My father created it before he died. I never saw everything inside, but Gavin once told me it contained names that could collapse companies, careers, maybe governments.”

Julian inhaled.

“I started moving Bennett money because Gavin told me Blackbird proved Robert Bennett had committed crimes while he was a prosecutor.”

I stood too quickly.

Pain cut through my abdomen.

Maya caught my arm.

“My father?”

Julian’s recording continued.

“I didn’t believe him at first. Then Gavin showed me documents with Robert’s signature.”

My hands began trembling.

“He said if I didn’t cooperate, he’d release them and destroy Claire’s family.”

Julian paused.

“I told myself that’s why I did it.”

His next words were quieter.

“But that’s a lie.”

I stared at the recorder.

“I liked the money. I liked Selena. I liked feeling powerful. And when Claire threatened to expose everything, I was more afraid of losing my life than I was of taking hers.”

For once, Julian told the truth.

Then came the final sentence.

“Blackbird is hidden in my father’s lake house.”

My father entered the room just as the recording ended.

I looked at him.

“Dad.”

He saw my expression.

“What?”

“What is Blackbird?”

He stopped.

And that was when I knew.

He had heard the name before.

My father sat down slowly.

“Claire…”

“No.”

My voice shook.

“No more protecting me with half-truths.”

Maya closed the door.

Dad looked twenty years older.

“Your grandfather created Blackbird.”

Julian had been wrong about that.

“Why?”

“To document people he feared.”

“What people?”

“Business partners. Politicians. Judges. Prosecutors.”

“Criminals?”

“Some.”

“And you?”

Dad looked directly at me.

“My name is in it.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“Because twenty-two years ago, I made the biggest mistake of my career.”

May you like

He took a breath.

“I trusted Gavin Pierce.”
