Chapter 2 - THE SECRET MY SISTER NEVER TOLD METhe doors slammed behind Sebastian, but his last words seemed to remain suspended over the ballroom.

You don’t know about Rachel.

Four hundred guests began talking at once.

Some rushed toward the exits. Others raised their phones, desperate to capture whatever came next. Reporters who had originally been invited to photograph the wedding of the year suddenly realized they had stumbled into a criminal investigation.

My sister stood near the back wall.

“Rachel?”

She looked at me as if she had been waiting years for me to ask the right question.

Detective Porter approached.

“We need somewhere private.”

The Whitmore Hotel manager offered us a conference suite on the second floor.

Twenty minutes later, my wedding became a crime scene.

Rachel, Detective Porter, Detective Cole, my attorney Maya Franklin, and I sat around a polished table while uniformed officers moved throughout the hotel.

I had changed into sweatpants and one of Rachel’s sweaters.

My hands would not stop shaking.

Not from fear.

From adrenaline.

“What did Sebastian mean?” I asked.

Rachel stared at the table.

“Five years ago, I worked for Vale Capital.”

I knew that.

Rachel had been twenty-seven and fresh out of graduate school.

She had lasted eight months before leaving suddenly.

She told our family the hours were unbearable.

“What happened?”

Rachel swallowed.

“I discovered irregular payments.”

My stomach tightened.

“What kind?”

“Consulting contracts. Millions of dollars paid to companies that didn’t appear to have employees.”

Exactly what I had discovered.

“I asked questions,” she continued. “My manager told me to stop.”

“And you did?”

She laughed bitterly.

“No.”

That sounded like Rachel.

“I copied records. Not because I thought there was some massive criminal conspiracy. I thought executives were inflating invoices. Then one night Sebastian came to my apartment.”

I went cold.

“You knew him before I did?”

“Yes.”

The word felt like a slap.

“You never told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“The first night you introduced him to us.”

I remembered.

A restaurant in Brooklyn.

Rachel had barely spoken.

Later she told me she had a migraine and left early.

“He told me you hated him.”

Rachel shook her head.

“Of course he did.”

She reached into her purse and removed an old phone.

“I still have the messages.”

She handed it to Detective Porter.

Rachel continued.

“Sebastian threatened me. He knew where Mom lived. He knew where I worked. He knew everything about me. He told me if I ever talked about what I found, he would destroy our family.”

“Why didn’t you go to the police?”

“I did.”

Everyone became quiet.

Rachel looked at Detective Porter.

“A detective took my statement. Two weeks later, I was told there wasn’t enough evidence. Then I lost my job. Three companies withdrew offers they had already made me.”

Maya leaned forward.

“Blacklisting?”

Rachel nodded.

“I couldn’t prove it.”

I looked at my sister, suddenly seeing those years differently.

The panic attacks.

The career change.

The way she became furious whenever Sebastian bought expensive gifts for our mother.

I had believed she was jealous.

Because Sebastian told me she was.

God.

He had rewritten my sister in my mind before I ever had the chance to understand her.

“Why didn’t you tell me after we became engaged?”

“I tried again.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Her eyes filled.

“I drove to your apartment.”

I remembered that too.

Sebastian had met Rachel downstairs.

He came upstairs alone and told me she had arrived drunk, insulted him, and left.

“She never came up,” I whispered.

“He wouldn’t let me.”

My stomach twisted.

“He told me if I interfered again, he would send certain photographs to my employer.”

“What photographs?”

Rachel looked away.

“Fabricated ones.”

Maya swore under her breath.

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“He had people. Private investigators. Tech contractors. Security consultants. He could manufacture almost anything.”

Detective Porter opened a notebook.

“Do you still have any evidence from Vale Capital?”

Rachel hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“A storage box.”

My sister looked at me.

“But there’s something else.”

There always was with Sebastian.

“The companies you found?” Rachel said. “Some existed when I worked there. Different names. Same addresses.”

Maya sat straighter.

“That could establish a long-running pattern.”

Rachel nodded.

“I kept copies.”

For the first time since Sebastian’s arrest, I felt something shift.

The case was no longer just about what he had done to me.

It might be about years of financial crimes.

Detective Cole’s phone rang.

He stepped into the hallway.

Thirty seconds later, he returned with an expression I didn’t like.

“What?”

“Sebastian’s attorneys are already moving.”

“Moving how?”

“They’re claiming the arrest was based on manipulated evidence.”

Maya almost smiled.

“Predictable.”

“There’s more. Vale Capital has released a statement saying Claire suffered a psychological crisis at the wedding.”

My hands curled into fists.

Already.

They were using his favorite weapon.

Me.

My supposed instability.

Rachel reached across the table and covered my hand.

“This time, you aren’t alone.”

My phone began vibrating.

Hundreds of messages.

Friends.

Reporters.

Former coworkers.

Strangers.

Then one name appeared that made my stomach drop.

DR. MARTIN REEVES.

Sebastian’s private physician.

I had met him three times.

Each time, Sebastian had insisted I was suffering from anxiety.

I answered.

“Dr. Reeves?”

His breathing sounded ragged.

“Claire, I need you to listen carefully.”

Maya activated speakerphone.

Dr. Reeves continued.

“Sebastian asked me to falsify medical records about you.”

Nobody moved.

“When?”

“Months ago.”

My throat tightened.

“Did you?”

A long silence.

“Yes.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

I asked the question anyway.

“Why are you telling me now?”

“Because Sebastian’s lawyers just called.”

“What did they want?”

“They want me to testify that you’re delusional.”

“And will you?”

“No.”

His voice cracked.

“I should have stopped this months ago.”

Maya wrote something quickly.

“Doctor, are you willing to provide sworn testimony?”

“Yes.”

A sudden sound interrupted him.

A door.

Then footsteps.

Dr. Reeves whispered, “Someone’s here.”

The call disconnected.

I stared at the phone.

Detective Porter was already standing.

“Call him back.”

I did.

Straight to voicemail.

Cole called dispatch.

Rachel went pale.

“What if Sebastian has people cleaning this up?”

No one answered.

Because we were all thinking the same thing.

The wedding had embarrassed Sebastian.

But humiliation was not what made him dangerous.

Evidence did.

And somewhere across Manhattan, the first man willing to admit that Sebastian Vale had manufactured a psychiatric case against me had just stopped answering his phone.

Maya closed her laptop.

“We need to assume everyone connected to this evidence may be at risk.”

Including Rachel.

Including me.

Including whoever else had helped Sebastian hide what he had done.

Detective Porter looked toward me.

“Claire, is there anything else you haven’t given us?”

I thought of the tiny flash drive hidden inside a place Sebastian would never think to search.

The only copy of a video recorded forty-eight hours before the wedding.

A video I had not shown in the ballroom.

“Yes.”

Everyone looked at me.

“There’s one more recording.”

“What’s on it?”

I met Rachel’s eyes.

“The night Sebastian tied my wrists, he wasn’t only trying to stop me from leaving.”

I took a breath.

“He was trying to make me tell him where I had hidden the original Vale Foundation ledger.”

Maya slowly lowered her pen.

“What ledger?”

“The one proving his father may be involved too.”

Rachel whispered, “Claire…”

But before she could finish, Detective Cole’s phone buzzed again.

He read the message.

Then looked at us.

“Dr. Reeves has been found.”

I stood.

“Is he alive?”

Cole nodded.

“Yes.”

Relief hit me.

May you like

Then he added, “But his office has been completely destroyed.”

And every medical file containing my real history was gone.
