Chapter 8 - THE LITTLE GIRL WHO REMEMBERED A SONGIsabella couldn't move.

For six years, she had imagined holding her daughter.
She had dreamed of tiny fingers, first steps, birthdays, bedtime stories.
She had imagined a thousand different versions of the reunion.
But never this.
Never a frightened little girl asking whether she would be abandoned again.
Isabella lowered herself slowly to her knees.
Her bruised ribs protested.
She barely noticed.
"What's your name, sweetheart?"
The child twisted a pink ribbon around one finger.
"Emma."
Isabella felt tears slide down her cheeks.
"Emma," she repeated softly.
It was beautiful.
A name she had never chosen.
A name she'd never had the chance to write on a birthday cake.
The little girl studied her.
"Are you crying because you're sad?"
Isabella shook her head.
"Because I'm very happy to meet you."
Emma looked confused.
"People don't usually cry when they're happy."
"Sometimes they do."
Emma considered this.
Then she held up a drawing.
"Do you like butterflies?"
Isabella smiled through her tears.
"Very much."
"Me too."
Emma returned to coloring.
Isabella looked toward Lucia.
The older woman nodded encouragingly.
"Let her come to you."
Isabella understood.
She wanted desperately to pull Emma into her arms.
But this child had experienced years of uncertainty.
She deserved patience.
She deserved choices.
She deserved to feel safe.
"May I sit beside you?" Isabella asked.
Emma nodded.
Isabella carefully lowered herself into a small chair.
Dante remained near the doorway.
He watched his wife pick up a yellow pencil.
For several minutes, they colored together.
Then Emma began humming.
A simple melody.
Four soft notes.
Isabella's pencil stopped.
She knew that song.
She had sung it every night during her pregnancy.
An old lullaby her grandmother used to sing.
She had never told anyone about it.
"Where did you learn that?" Isabella whispered.
Emma looked up.
"Grandma Lucia."
Isabella turned.
Lucia smiled sadly.
"When Emma came here, she kept asking for her mother. I searched through the files we recovered. There was a letter you wrote before she was born."
Isabella's breath caught.
"A letter?"
Lucia nodded.
"To your baby."
Isabella remembered.
At six months pregnant, she had written a letter describing all the things she hoped to teach her daughter.
She had included the words to the lullaby.
She thought the hospital had destroyed it.
"How did you get it?"
"Your mother kept a copy."
Isabella stared.
"My mother?"
Lucia's expression changed.
"Yes."
Isabella slowly shook her head.
"That's impossible. My mother died when I was sixteen."
Lucia frowned.
"Isabella, your mother's name was Eleanor Hart, wasn't it?"
"Yes."
Lucia looked at Dante.
Then back at Isabella.
"Eleanor was one of the first people to question what happened at St. Bartholomew's."
Isabella felt dizzy.
"What?"
"She discovered irregular birth records while working as a nurse. She contacted me anonymously."
Isabella stared.
Her mother had died of a supposed heart attack.
She had been forty-seven.
Perfectly healthy.
The sudden death had devastated Isabella.
"What are you saying?"
Lucia took her hand.
"I'm saying your mother tried to expose the same people who took Emma."
Isabella covered her mouth.
Dante stepped toward her.
"Sweetheart?"
She stared at Lucia.
"Did they kill her?"
Lucia's eyes filled with tears.
"I don't know."
The answer was careful.
And devastating.
"But I believe her death deserves a new investigation."
Isabella began shaking.
Dante wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
Emma looked up.
"Mommy?"
The word escaped so naturally that everyone froze.
Emma blinked.
"Can I call you that?"
Isabella began crying uncontrollably.
"Yes, sweetheart."
Emma slipped from her chair.
She approached cautiously.
Then placed her tiny hand on Isabella's knee.
"Are you going to stay?"
Isabella gently held her hand.
"If you'll let me."
Emma thought about that.
"Even when I get scared at night?"
"Especially then."
"Even when I spill juice?"
Isabella laughed through her tears.
"Even then."
Emma glanced at Dante.
"Who's he?"
Dante crouched.
"My name is Dante."
Emma studied his tattoos.
"Are those flowers?"
He looked down at the roses inked across his hands.
"Some of them."
"Did they hurt?"
He smiled faintly.
"A little."
Emma frowned.
"Then why did you get them?"
Dante glanced at Isabella.
"Sometimes people make choices they wouldn't make again."
Emma nodded seriously.
"My friend at school cut her own bangs."
Dante laughed.
A genuine laugh.
One Isabella hadn't heard in weeks.
Emma looked pleased.
Then she stepped closer to Isabella.
"Can I hug you?"
Isabella opened her arms.
"Of course."
Emma moved carefully into her embrace.
Isabella held her daughter for the first time.
She closed her eyes.
The world disappeared.
No father-in-law.
No criminal empire.
No threatening phone calls.
Only a child.
Her child.
Warm.
Alive.
Real.
Isabella whispered into Emma's curls:
"I've loved you since before you were born."
Emma hugged her tighter.
An hour later, Jonathan Vale gathered the adults inside Lucia's study.
Emma remained nearby with a trusted caregiver, happily showing off her butterfly drawings.
Jonathan placed a thick folder on the table.
"Before we discuss the evidence, we need to establish Emma's legal status."
Dante frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"Her current identity was created through a fraudulent adoption process. We have strong documentary evidence connecting her to Isabella, but independent testing and court proceedings are necessary."
Isabella tightened her grip on Dante's hand.
"Could they take her away again?"
Jonathan met her eyes.
"Our priority is preventing that. I've already contacted the appropriate child-protection authorities and requested emergency safeguards."
Dante nodded.
"Whatever she needs, she gets."
Jonathan continued.
"Emma has been living under the name Emma Cross."
The room fell silent.
Isabella looked up.
"Cross?"
Jonathan nodded.
"Adrian Cross is her adoptive father of record."
Dante stood abruptly.
"The man threatening my wife?"
"Yes."
Isabella felt sick.
"But he told me his daughter died of leukemia."
Lucia shook her head.
"That was a story designed to gain your trust."
Jonathan opened another document.
"Adrian's late wife, Catherine, believed Emma was legally adopted. After Catherine died, Adrian began treating the child as an asset tied to his business arrangements."
Dante's voice hardened.
"He knows who her biological mother is."
"Yes."
"And he threatened Isabella with her own child."
"Yes."
Dante walked to the window.
He stared at the woods.
Every instinct screamed at him to find Adrian and make him suffer.
But he remembered Isabella's promise.
No more violence.
No more allowing criminals to turn everything into a war.
He turned back.
"What evidence do you have?"
Jonathan opened the folder.
"Financial transfers, adoption records, forged death certificates, witness statements, and recorded conversations."
Lucia added:
"We also have evidence linking Adrian to your father's recent business activities."
Dante frowned.
"What exactly happened between them?"
Lucia's face darkened.
"Your father believed he could regain control of the organization through Adrian. Instead, Adrian used his connections to take over."
"Why didn't Vittorio stop him?"
"Because Adrian discovered evidence implicating him in several murders."
Dante looked away.
Lucia continued.
"Vittorio became desperate. He thought if he forced you to transfer ownership, he could bargain with Adrian."
Dante slowly nodded.
"And Isabella was the leverage."
"Yes."
Jonathan slid another page across the table.
"This is the most important document."
Dante read it.
Then stopped.
It was a statement signed by Rafe Callahan.
The man who had beaten Isabella.
But the signature was dated that morning.
"Where is he?" Dante demanded.
"In federal custody."
Dante looked up.
"He surrendered?"
Jonathan nodded.
"After Adrian threatened his family."
Dante read the statement again.
Rafe confessed to assaulting Isabella.
He identified Vittorio as the man who ordered her intimidation.
And he named Adrian Cross as the financier behind the operation.
But one paragraph stood out.
The original instruction was to frighten Mrs. Moretti into compliance. After the assault, Mr. Cross ordered a second operation intended to cause a medical emergency and force Mr. Moretti to sign the transfer agreements.
Dante's stomach dropped.
"He's planning another attack."
Jonathan nodded.
"We believe so."
Then Lucia's phone rang.
She glanced at the screen.
Her expression turned white.
"Jonathan."
The attorney looked up.
"What?"
"Someone has breached the outer security gate."
Dante moved toward the door.
Marco appeared in the corridor.
"Boss, we have vehicles approaching."
"How many?"
"Four."
"Police?"
"No."
Dante looked toward Isabella.
She was holding Emma's hand.
His entire world stood in front of him.
He turned to Marco.
"Call the authorities. Secure the evidence. Nobody engages unless someone is in immediate danger."
Marco nodded.
Then his phone vibrated.
A video appeared on the screen.
It showed the front gates.
A black SUV stood in the driveway.
Beside it was Adrian Cross.
He looked directly at the security camera.
And smiled.
Then the loudspeaker crackled.
"Good afternoon, Dante."
Dante stared.
May you like
Adrian raised a folder.
"I've come to collect my daughter."
