Chapter 2 - THE SECRET MY WIFE TOOK TO HER GRAVEFor twelve seconds, I stood in my son's empty bedroom, unable to understand what I was seeing.

The blue comforter lay twisted across the mattress.

His favorite stuffed dinosaur rested against the headboard.

His wheelchair remained beside the bed.

That was the detail that terrified me most.

Noah couldn't walk.

Whoever had taken him had carried him out.

"SECURITY!" I roared.

My voice echoed through the mansion.

Nothing.

I ran into the hallway, gun raised, scanning the shadows.

Two armed guards should have been stationed outside the children's wing.

Both were missing.

I pressed the emergency button on my phone.

No response.

The private security network had been disconnected.

I dialed 911.

Then I heard something.

Three soft knocks.

They came from behind the wall.

I lowered the phone.

Our mansion had been built in 1928, long before my family purchased it. During renovations, contractors discovered several concealed service corridors.

I had ordered every entrance sealed.

Or so I believed.

Another knock.

Then a muffled voice.

"Daddy?"

My heart almost stopped.

"Noah!"

I followed the sound to an antique bookshelf near the end of the hallway.

Three knocks came again.

I grabbed the shelf and pulled.

Nothing.

Then I noticed a narrow brass button hidden beneath the lowest wooden panel.

I pressed it.

The bookshelf clicked.

A section of the wall shifted inward.

And there, in a narrow passage illuminated by a small flashlight, stood Emma Reed.

She was holding my son.

Noah had both arms wrapped around her neck.

"Put him down!" I shouted.

Emma flinched.

"Mr. Calder, listen to me."

"PUT MY SON DOWN!"

"He's alive because I moved him!"

Before I could respond, a deafening gunshot exploded behind me.

Wood splintered from the bookshelf.

Emma screamed.

I threw myself through the opening and slammed the hidden panel shut.

A second bullet struck the wall.

Noah began crying.

"Daddy!"

I dropped to my knees and wrapped my arms around him.

He was shaking violently.

"I'm here, buddy. I'm here."

Emma pressed a finger against her lips.

"Someone's inside the house."

"No kidding," I snapped. "Who?"

"I don't know which one."

My eyes narrowed.

"Which one?"

She swallowed.

"There are at least two people working against you."

I stared at her.

"You have ten seconds to explain."

"Your wife contacted me six weeks before she died."

The words struck harder than the gunshots.

"That's impossible."

"She knew someone was stealing from your company. She knew someone had been following Noah. She hired my older sister to investigate."

"Your sister?"

"Detective Rachel Reed."

I knew that name.

Rachel Reed had been a Massachusetts state investigator who died in an alleged boating accident three months after Caroline's death.

"The police said your sister drowned."

Emma's face hardened.

"My sister was murdered."

Outside the passage, heavy footsteps moved through the hallway.

I tightened my grip on Noah.

Emma continued in a whisper.

"Rachel discovered that your wife's death wasn't an accident. She left me documents, but several were encrypted. Before she died, she told me one thing."

"What?"

"Caroline hid the final evidence somewhere only Noah would remember."

My son's small fingers dug into my shirt.

"Daddy," he whispered, "Mommy made me promise."

"Promise what, buddy?"

"Not to tell Uncle Adrian."

A sickening feeling spread through my stomach.

Emma reached into her nightgown pocket and handed me Caroline's silver necklace.

I recognized the tiny scratch on its clasp.

I'd made that scratch accidentally when I gave it to her on our fifth anniversary.

It was real.

Inside the pendant was a folded photograph and a small piece of paper.

I opened the note.

Caroline's handwriting.

Vincent, if you're reading this, I failed to stop them. Please believe Noah. He saw more than anyone knows.

My vision blurred.

For fourteen months, I'd believed my wife died because someone wanted to destroy me.

Now I understood something much worse.

Caroline had known the danger was coming.

And she'd tried to warn us.

A loud crash echoed behind the hidden wall.

Someone was searching the bedroom.

Emma touched my arm.

"There's an exit through the old greenhouse. We have to move."

I looked at her.

"How do you know these passages?"

"Rachel found the original architectural drawings."

Another sound interrupted us.

A man's voice.

"Check the panel. They couldn't have gone far."

I recognized the voice immediately.

Thomas Grady.

My head of security.

A former Marine I'd trusted for nine years.

The man who carried Noah out of the wrecked SUV.

The man I'd paid two million dollars to overhaul our protection systems after the bombing.

My stomach turned.

Thomas had access to everything.

My home.

My cameras.

My son's medical records.

My gun safe.

My routines.

"Move," I whispered.

We hurried through the narrow corridor.

Emma carried Noah while I stayed behind them, listening for footsteps.

We reached a metal staircase descending into darkness.

As Emma started down, Noah grabbed my sleeve.

"Daddy?"

"Yes?"

He looked at me with frightened eyes.

"Mommy wasn't supposed to be in the car that day."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"She said someone changed the plan."

"Who, Noah?"

His lips trembled.

Then he said something that made my heart feel as though it had been ripped apart.

"Uncle Adrian told Mommy you wanted her to surprise you."

I could barely breathe.

That morning, Caroline had taken Noah to meet me at our corporate headquarters.

I hadn't requested a surprise.

I hadn't even been in the building.

Adrian had told me Caroline wanted to take Noah shopping.

Someone had deliberately brought my wife and son to the vehicle.

Someone who knew exactly where the bomb was hidden.

Suddenly, the passage lights flashed red.

A mechanical lock clicked behind us.

Then another.

Emma stopped halfway down the stairs.

"No," she whispered.

"What?"

"The escape doors are being sealed."

A speaker crackled above our heads.

And Adrian Calder's familiar voice filled the passage.

"Vincent, you really should have stayed in your office."

I raised my gun toward the speaker.

"Adrian!"

His laughter echoed through the corridor.

"Brother, brother. You always did make things complicated."

"What did you do to my family?"

A pause.

Then Adrian answered calmly.

"Your family was supposed to die together."

Emma pulled Noah closer.

My brother continued.

"But since you've finally discovered the truth, I suppose it's time we finished what we started."

A metallic grinding sound came from below us.

The emergency fire door began closing over the only visible exit.

May you like

And behind us, footsteps started descending the stairs.

We were trapped.
