Chapter 9 - THE SECRET EVELYN NEVER KNEWEvelyn stared at the document.

“That’s impossible.”

Harper was asleep upstairs.

Dominic, Marcus, Isabella, Graham, and Evelyn gathered in the library.

Twenty million dollars.

Transferred into a trust bearing Harper’s name.

“Why my daughter?” Evelyn asked.

Nobody answered.

Then Isabella noticed the trustee.

She went pale.

“Thomas Bell.”

Dominic looked at her.

“The man who hid you in Vermont?”

“Yes.”

“Why would Celeste send him money?”

Isabella shook her head.

“She wouldn’t.”

Marcus examined the registration history.

The trust had not been created yesterday.

It had existed for four years.

Celeste had merely added money.

Original creator:

Julian Vale.

Dominic sat down.

“What?”

Evelyn stared.

“I never met Julian.”

Isabella looked at Evelyn carefully.

“What was your husband’s name?”

Evelyn stiffened.

“Harper’s father?”

“Yes.”

“Michael Carter.”

“When did he die?”

“Before Harper was born.”

“How?”

“Car accident.”

Isabella and Dominic exchanged a look.

Too many car accidents.

Marcus began researching.

Michael Carter existed.

Construction worker.

Married Evelyn.

Killed four years ago.

But his birth certificate raised a question.

His mother’s name: Lillian Carter.

Father: unknown.

Isabella closed her eyes.

“I knew Lillian.”

Dominic turned.

“How?”

“She worked here.”

“Here?”

“Twenty-nine years ago.”

Graham’s expression changed.

“Salvatore.”

Isabella nodded.

Evelyn stood.

“No.”

Dominic understood before she did.

Michael Carter had been Salvatore Vale’s illegitimate son.

Dominic’s half-brother.

Which made Harper—

Dominic looked toward the ceiling.

His niece.

Evelyn sat slowly.

“This is insane.”

Isabella explained.

Salvatore had confessed the affair years later.

He paid Lillian quietly.

Never acknowledged Michael.

Julian discovered the truth while investigating the surveillance network.

“He found Michael,” Isabella said.

Dominic struggled to process it.

“Did Michael know?”

“Probably.”

Marcus searched Julian’s recovered files.

One document referenced M.C.

Another contained payments into the Harper trust.

Julian had been secretly protecting his half-brother’s child.

Celeste knew.

And Celeste had transferred twenty million into Harper’s name.

Why?

Graham answered.

“To make Harper look like an heir receiving stolen money.”

Dominic looked at him.

“Explain.”

“If authorities expose the network and financial crimes, Celeste wants another narrative ready.”

Evelyn understood.

“She makes it look like my daughter benefited.”

“Not Harper personally,” Graham said. “You.”

Evelyn went still.

The trust listed Evelyn as Harper’s guardian.

Twenty million dollars could be framed as payment.

For finding the cassette.

For assisting Dominic.

For participating in a conspiracy.

Celeste had created leverage.

Again.

Dominic slammed the folder closed.

“She’s still manufacturing betrayal.”

Exactly like Julian.

Evelyn stared at him.

“You believe me?”

He answered without hesitation.

“Yes.”

She almost cried.

It mattered.

Dominic had learned.

Seven years too late for Julian.

But not too late for Evelyn.

Marcus traced the transfer authorization.

It required an in-person biometric confirmation.

Celeste had completed it at a private banking suite in Manhattan less than sixteen hours earlier.

Security footage showed her leaving.

Then entering a cab.

License plate visible.

The cab company had records.

Destination:

Grand Central Terminal.

From there, Celeste could go anywhere.

Marcus checked cameras.

Nothing.

Then Harper wandered into the library rubbing her eyes.

“Mommy?”

Evelyn lifted her.

“Did we wake you?”

“I had a bad dream.”

Harper saw Celeste’s photograph on the table.

“That’s the lady.”

Everyone froze.

“What lady?” Dominic asked.

“The lady who gave me candy.”

“When?”

Harper thought.

“Before Mommy went missing.”

Evelyn’s heart pounded.

“Where?”

“In the kitchen.”

“What did she say?”

Harper rested her head against Evelyn.

“She said Daddy loved me.”

Silence.

Evelyn stared.

“My husband died before Harper could remember him.”

Dominic crouched.

“What else did she say?”

Harper frowned in concentration.

“She said Daddy left me a house by the water.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“Michael owned no house.”

Marcus looked at the others.

“Maybe he didn’t legally.”

They searched Michael’s old employment records.

For two years before his death, he worked renovations on a property near Cold Spring.

Owner hidden behind a shell company.

That shell company belonged to Julian.

At dawn, they drove there.

Dominic, Evelyn, Marcus, and Isabella.

Harper stayed with Graham and guards.

The house overlooked the Hudson River.

Small.

Weathered.

Empty.

Inside, Evelyn found something that broke her.

A photograph.

Michael holding newborn Harper.

Beside him stood Julian.

Dominic had never seen the picture.

On the back, Julian had written:

She deserves a family that doesn’t lie to her.

Dominic sat down.

For several minutes he could not speak.

Julian had known everything.

Michael’s identity.

Harper.

Isabella’s survival.

Celeste’s network.

And he had died trying to put the family back together.

They searched the house.

Behind a loose fireplace brick, Marcus found a metal box.

Inside were letters from Michael to Evelyn.

Never sent.

Michael had discovered his biological father was Salvatore Vale.

He had been terrified that revealing it would pull Evelyn and their unborn baby into a dangerous family.

He planned to tell her after dismantling the surveillance network with Julian.

He never got the chance.

His “car accident” happened six weeks later.

Celeste again.

Evelyn sat on the floor crying.

“He thought he was protecting us.”

Isabella held her.

Dominic opened the final envelope.

Addressed to him.

Michael had written:

Dominic,

You don’t know me, but we share a father.

Julian found me.

He says you’re difficult, stubborn, and loyal enough to get yourself killed.

Despite everything, Dominic laughed once.

That sounded like Julian.

The letter continued.

If something happens to me, protect Evelyn and my child. They don’t know anything about this world and shouldn’t.

Dominic looked toward Evelyn.

He had failed a brother he never knew existed.

But perhaps not completely.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Celeste.

“Beautiful house, isn’t it?”

Dominic looked around.

She was watching.

“Where are you?”

“Close.”

Marcus signaled his men.

Celeste laughed.

“Don’t bother.”

“What do you want?”

“To finish the experiment.”

Dominic’s jaw tightened.

“This isn’t an experiment.”

“It always was.”

“What experiment?”

Celeste’s voice softened.

“Whether a Vale can choose love over power.”

Dominic looked at Evelyn, Isabella, Michael’s letters.

“You already have your answer.”

“Do I?”

A pause.

“Because while you were searching Michael’s house…”

Dominic’s blood turned cold.

“…Harper was back at Vale Manor.”

He turned to Marcus.

Marcus called security.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Celeste whispered:

“You should have learned by now.”

May you like

Dominic ran for the door.

“Never leave the child behind.”
